George Washington with the axe? Should be more like a different George … George Santos (or George Devolder or Anthony Devolder or Anthony Zabrovsky or Kitara Ravache, or whatever his/her/their real name turns out to be). With Donald Trump (or John Barron or John Miller or David Dennison) as the role model, the art of lying has become a feature, not a bug, for today’s Republicans. In the words of Rudy Giuliani, “Truth isn’t truth”; or Kellyanne Conjob, “alternative ‘facts’.”
When Joe Biden accurately stated that SOME Republicans wanted to either abolish or “sunset” (allow to expire) Social Security and Medicare, lying Republican hypocrites falsely accused him of lying.
Sure, not all of them support abolishing Social Security and Medicare. Ssome merely want to raise the eligibility ages, reduce the benefits, slow sown the cost-of-living adjustment, privatize it, or undermine it in other ways.
But Biden never said they ALL wanted to abolish or “sunset” Social Security and Medicare, only some of them. And the next day Biden was ready, with printed proposals from Florida Senator Rick Scott (who was chair of the 2022 senate campaign committee) to “sunset” ALL government programs every five years, and videos of similar proposals from Utah Senator Mike Lee (to specifically abolish Social Security and Medicare) and videos of Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson calling Social Security a “Ponzi scheme” and later proposing to “sunset” ALL government programs EVERY single year, not every five like Rick Scott. Soctt, Lee and Johnson are high-profile long-serving senators, not exactly back benchers. While I doubt such videos and proposals got much air play on Faux “News” and other right-wing conspiracy-theory, reality-denial hate media, they were widely reported and circulated elsewhere.
