I worked in a Jackson, MS mall back in the late 70s. A wall behind one of the water fountains still had the outlines of the notice “Whites only.” In many (South) places water fountains, bathrooms, public services were available only for whites to use. I kept thinking about my niblings, who were young then, needing to go to the bathroom and having to wait until they got home. Or thirsty and couldn’t have a drink. Shameful.
A former black co-worker related this story that happened during Jim Crow times. She and her family were light complexioned, a color sometimes referred to as “high yaller”: “Years ago we piled in the car to travel south for a funeral. We stopped at segregated restaurant and had a nice meal without incident. As we were leaving, our waitress called out in a friendly voice, ’ Y’all come back now, Y’ heya. We don’ git many Eye-talians down heya.’ Laughing as she told me the story, she said, ‘If only they knew, if only they knew!’”
Mike, I think you are being too kind to use the word “colored”. Cadet Bonespurs probably uses another word in private (as things are going, he may start using it in public soon).

And let’s be clear: Trump’s language was absolutely and unquestionably racist despite his denials to the contrary.
