Uncle Remus? Little Black Sambo? It is still racist. The racism is presented differently these days. Uh, when did your rapist forebearers enter the country? Your dearest leader wants to know.
Loving the singers, actors and musicians does not stop you from being racist. It just means you like the money being brought in by these people and the entertainment value. But unless they are famous, will you still be ama! happy they are in the same class as your kids, in the same neighbourhood as yourself? Will the police not still stop them only because they are driving an expensive car? Will you be as happy that your son or daughter chooses one for a spouse? Will the press be as respectful to the black politicians as the others – they certainly weren’t with Obama! And the clincher: how many pro- Black Lives Matter cartoons did you publish?
You know, Rammie dear. You made this picture up yourself, don’t u?
Yes. The answer you are looking for is “yes.”
The kid isn’t. What about his parents?
Draw a cartoon of a Trump rally where the gurning morons chant his inanities on demand.
wow…. just wow… i have no words
Mr. Ramirez, thank you for pointing out how non-racist and accepting people in the U.S. are … /s
We can be bombarded with all the popular culture in the world where the entertainment and media industries led us to believe everyone is represented because: #1 they “have to” follow the rules of inclusivity by law to avoid facing discrimination lawsuits and most importantly, #2 the exploitation of stereotypes and the patronization of other cultures and ethnic groups produces money in a market where we have all become a product to sell you something or to entertain the masses; Sadly, this is nothing more than a façade to make us all believe everything is fine and we all live in this ‘goody goody’ world where the sun always shine, everybody is treated rightfully and we can all hold hands and sing ♫ Kumbaya, my Lord, kumbaya ♪… Oh pleeease! Most of us are aware about the real world.
Is America racist? I got a better question, can we do better?… Yes we can!
Mr. Ramirez, which Grand Wizard let you into his house to draw his kid’s room? Also, disappointed no poster of Sandy Koufax next to Jackie Robinson, because as we witnessed in Charlottesville, that form of racism is still very much alive today too…
Note that Mr.Ramirez included his version of the Obama “Hope” poster, complete with a caricature of President Obama, which just might be a teensy weeny bit racist.
Let them drive thru rich white neighborhoods and then we’ll see. Or walk thru the neighborhood one night.
“You’ve got to be taughtTo hate And fearYou’ve got to be taughtFrom year To year Its got toBe drummed in your dear little earYou’ve got to Be carefully TaughtYou’ve got to be taughtTo be Afraid Of peopleWho’s eyes are oddly madeAnd people who’s skin is a different shadeYou’ve got to Be carefully Taught” -South Pacific
That’s a tough question. But I would say the question posed by the caption is phrased rather poorly, because it can be answered in several ways. If the question is “Is America overtly racist?”, one could truthfully answer “No.” But add one letter, “Is America covertly racist?”, the answer is very different.
What an idiotic cartoon. Learn about systemic racism before trying to comment on it.
Yup.. we all are, it’s in our very DNA to be wary of those not like us.
Of course it is. If you’re blind to that, perhaps, you should do a bit more research.
Yes, of course it is still racist, maybe slowly getting better, but when we have setbacks like electing a racist moron, the spotlight gets very bright.
Ramirez obviously saw the Trumpty-Dumpty white supremacist’s rally at the White House this weekend way differently than I did. Also obvious was how many of them came prepared and armed for violence. The fear of their shrinking relevance is making them insane as they believed Trumpty-Dumpty to be their savior. There is hope in the dwindling numbers of the Repugnantent’s base and the increase of our young ones growing up to see them as the hateful relics they are.
Only if you’re white.
As the toon indicates, it is the younger set, the Xers and younger kids that aren’t racist as they have the experience with other races. The racists are those that are much older and have not had the personal experience to teach them about others different from themselves.
Trump Republicans are fine with other races, as long as they are the ones on top and in charge.
Mostly just grown up Trump supporters.
Umm..yes. And if you weren’t so shallow you would see the truth. Just when I start to think there might be a working heart in you, you do something this ridiculous.Crap like this is exactly what people complain about.
Some of it sure is.
Yes, although the ‘liberal elites’ in sports and entertainment sure are trying to counter it, as you so aptly depict.
I could imagine a hundred years ago, white folks going to a minstrel show and then claiming afterward that they’re not racist because they enjoyed the songs.
The art work is fantastic. The caption misses a possibly valid point that could be made; that there is hope the newer generations are much less subject to racism than their elders.
America, currently? Perhaps it is not racist. But we are still seeing the effects of our past racism every day.
Oh my god, wonderful, Michael! I can’t wait for you to tell all the Black parents that they can dispense with giving the talk. Happy happy days!
Jackie Robinson entering major league baseball didn’t prevent the murder of Emmet Till eight years later.
Just white supremacist republicans, they ran on racism the last 12 years.
Bush won by scaring America with scary black man Willie Horton.
Trump tried to win by telling the USA that BLM was going to kick down their front door and steal everything they have.
No one is as racist as Confederate and Nazi flag carrying lying right wingers.
At least the young kid isn’t watching Fox News . . . ./s
Ramirez did a good job. His comic does depict what I see with most these days. Sport heroes, movie stars, celebrities, business professionals, and other cultures are followed and idealized in the lives of all of us, I for one included, despite their ethnic background. I think, in my opinion, we have gone far in recent decades to try to move beyond color bias and just be people with our own attributes, based on my personal observations and experiences.
It depends on the individual, the groups they belong to, and support.
let us face facts, we are all racists to a degree. it is a facet hardwired into our brains since we came out of the trees and is still there. it is an “Us vs Them” mentality and race is the most easily identifiable sign of difference.
I don’t think you are capable of asking that question Ramirez, or understanding the answer… considering that you don’t know what racism actually is in the first place.
America elected a black man as president twice and likely a black women president, so of course it is, the logic is irrefutable
The democrats used to claim that color does not matter. Now they claim that it is all that matters. Obama and crew did more damage to race relations than any president since Lincoln. Don’t blame Trump, blame the folks who always have to put a hyphen before the word American.
If Mike Ramirez is any indication, yes, America is very racist!
That child does not represent those that follow the Donald. He is a lucky little boy! Good on his parent! Wish I had a class full of him and his sister!
Where is his “Jews will not replace us” poster?
I can’t breathe
His having books by Thomas Sowell and Clarence Thomas are supposed to show he’s NOT racist?
Give me a break.
… and I noticed Ramirez’s degrading caricature on the Obama Hope poster, now That’s racist!
Oh Sweetie Yes! Still.
ask the KKK and proud boys and you’ll get your answer
ask the Kkk and proud boys. you’ll get your answer
You tell me Ramirez.
This is kid is probably not racist. About 47% of America, yes, it is racist. Actively racist or by cowardly not standing up against systemic racism.
Not only racist, but a country with massive inequality. https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/02/07/6-facts-about-economic-inequality-in-the-u-s/
Let’s see, when the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act (thanks Clarence) Southern states acted immediately to reinstate voting restrictions. Though the stated goal was to prevent (nonexistent) voter fraud, the obvious goal was to prevent minorities from voting. So yeah, American racism exists. Then there’s all those millions who voted to reelect a cruel, blatant racist like Donald Trump.
The US has a lot of systemic racism. If it weren’t so, black parents would not have to have “the talk” with their kids about how to cope w/ police. If it weren’t so, Hispanic folks wouldn’t be so afraid of filling out their census forms because the fear being confronted by ICE agents, regardless of whether they’re citizens. If it weren’t so, then the number of black students in university would be proportional to the number in the population at large. And they wouldn’t be over-represented in athletics and under-represented in graduate school. And on and on and on…
Because one kid means Racism is Dead, right?
Funny, I thought they killed racism when Kamala Harris was elected VP. And when Obama was elected. On when Halle Berry won the Best Actress Oscar. Or when Vanessa Williams won Miss America. Or…
Sadly, I would have to say too much of America is racist or are bigots. The color of their skin, their country (or state) of origin, their religion – there is far too much hate for such superficial reasons.
Ramirez, you’re NOT implying that being racist is a BAD thing, are you?
Good question and it provoked a lot of answers.
