There goes Michael Ramirez again, proving he knows nothing of socialism and even less of world geography.
Why is it that the extreme right (who supports socialism for themselves — corporate welfare, government handouts, subsidies and “incentives” to billionaire owners of sports teams or massive corporations to attract them to their cities — but not for people who actually need it) always points to corrupt authoritarian dictatorships such as Cuba, North Korea, the former USSR or Venezuela, which may CALL themselves “socialist,” but have ZERO resemblance to actual socialism?
Why don’t they point to countries that have high levels of ACTUAL socialism (medical care without fee for service, deductibles, copays; universal tuition-free education through college; excellent social safety net; corporations [such as IKEA, Nokia, Volvo, Skype, Ericsson, Saab] that are highly taxed and regulated and still profitable) and are extremely successful and happy, such as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Canada, New Zealand, Finland, Iceland or the Netherlands?
Why do they accuse Democrats of supporting policies that failed in Venezuela and the old Soviet Union based on their MISUSE OF LABELS, while they worship a criminal UNELECTED “president” who was installed by an actual communist — a proud former top KGB officer who specialized in using KOMPROMAT to cultivate witting or unwitting (or in the case of Trump, half witted) assets.
See which one trusts a KGB asset manipulator and then talk about who is the communist.
CONservatives want all the REAL socialism for themselves but demonize it for anyone else and compare it to failed STRONG-ARM DICTATORSHIPS that have more in common with what Trump aspires to be.
How much longer do we have to wait for capitalism to lower the cost of healthcare, education, housing, infrastructure repair, prescription drugs and create good paying jobs so that a single salary can sustain a family … or at least compete evenly with the standards of living of the socialist hybrids in Scandinavian nations?
Change is hard for some Republicans yet they made an abrupt change after Nixon such that Eisenhower Republicans would be seen as Democrats today. The Millennials are the victims of the inflexible austerity the Republicans and supply-side advocates have imposed on the economy giving free stuff (tax breaks) to the wealthy and excluding the middle-class workers from sharing the profits derived from their own productivity while raising the debt their children will have to pay.
Hey ramirez, did get the news last night? Waiting for your “prayers and thoughts” for the New-Zealanders mowed down by another idiot, god fearing white supremacist. Or are you still too outraged by Muslim Omar so-called antisemitism? Words VS guns… It’s all fair and easy, right?
Yes there is a difference between socialism and democratic socialism. With socialism, the State forcibly takes your hard earned money. With democratic socialism, everyone votes to forcibly take your hard earned money.
I like constitutional constraints on government and dislike unhindered majoritarianism.
So my gut instinct is to reject Swiss-style direct democracy as a governing system. Yet I have to give credit to the Swiss people for being very sensible when asked to vote in national referendums.
For example:-In 2010, nearly 60 percent of the electorate rejected a class-warfare income tax proposal.-In 2014, Swiss voters overwhelmingly killed a minimum-wage mandate.-Also in 2014, the voters of Switzerland rejected single-payer healthcare by a landslide margin.-And in 2015, more than 70 percent of voters rejected a federal death tax.
And don’t forget they voted by a landslide margin in favor of a spending cap back in 2001.
And then in 2016, voters were asked today to decide whether every adult should automatically receive more than $2,500 per month as part of a guaranteed basic income.
Sounds like a nice free lunch, right? That offer might be very attractive in a place like France, but Swiss voters apparently understand that government can’t give all that money to people without first taking that amount of money from people. They rejected Bernie-nomics by an overwhelming margin.
@comicsrrd…Google can be your friend or your nemesis. There are ongoing and successful experiments on every continent concerning guaranteed basic income. What you are spewing is about Universal basic income.
It’s fine to “exceptional” if it’s actually more efficient, more cost-effective, or more accessible but when it only a means a legal “free ride” to excessive profit for megacorporations …
I have the feeling Venezuela would do just fine if the US would let them enjoy THEIR oil and quit trying to steal it. We may need their help after President Cheetos bankrupts American killing innocent people in the middle east.
Maduro replaced Chavez. They both surrounded themselves with crooked Generals and Legislators as all dictators do. You can call them what you wish and what you will. Dictators are not Socialist. They stripped Venezuela of its wealth. It costs a lot to keep all those enablers on the payroll. They allow only enough to ‘trickle down’ to the masses to keep them from their throats.
This would be mildly funny if Venezuela were a socialist country, but it isn’t. Venezuela is a despotic dictatorship. I’m actually surprised that Dotard isn’t a big fan of Maduro and the memory of Chavez, since both are more like Putin, Kim, and Hitler who are all heroes of the conman-in-chief.

Mr. Ramirez is beating the ‘dead horse socialism’ issue again. It must be a slow news day in his own little world.

Bob Gorrell already did this lazy cartoon: https://www.gocomics.com/bobgorrell/2019/03/12
Using Venezuela to say all socialism is bad like using this cartoon (and Gorrell’s) to say all cartoonists are lazy
