What government can do: Kill you with drone missiles. Imprison you indefinitely. Put you in a uniform and send you off to war to get killed. Take your house & property. Execute you. Man: Make people buy health insurance?! Now you're going too far. Tea Party: Next they'll try to make us eat broccoli!

Doesn’t that saving lives and making lives better, and healthier, defy that silly “general welfare” idea? Let’s all get on the bandwagon for the “Ryan plan ice flow”!

I have this image of a civilized society — a society in which people care for each other and create the institutions which can make that care effective — a society which pays attention to the world around us — a society which creates the conditions in which each individual can flourish — a society in which skills and education are taken seriously — a society in which differences are appreciated rather than used as grounds for suspicion and hatred. I guess that’s all too much to ask for.
If you don’t like the individual mandate, then come up with a universal insurance system that works. It’s not hard — just look around at the other countries that manage to do it. Does American Exceptionalism mean the US is too stupid to learn from example?

It WILL be interesting to see what SCOTUS comes up with, because the ONLY feature of the Act challenged is the mandate to buy insurance from PRIVATE INSURERS, which I also agree should not be there. Instead, the law should have had “not for profit” single payer coverage for all.
