Trump needs a wall for a made up border crisis and a bone to throw to his trumsters. He wants everyone to believe that a wall is the only solution to true border security. A 2000 mile wall is down to 200 miles. I guess the crisis is shrinking. Federal workers just need to earn a living like the rest of us.
One wonders where the “crisis” has been over the last two years. One wonders why the president didn’t accept the deal offered in January 2018 that would have provided $27 billion for his wall; a deal he had agreed to sign only up and until the Fox pundits told him what a bad idea it was. So he reneged. We didn’t have a crisis until after the 2018 midterms. So his “compromise” is trying to salvage the deal he didn’t take. Now, even his own party members don’t trust him to keep his word. How can you negotiate with anyone who changes their mind minute by minute (see his tweets)?
Those of us who applied for government jobs, but were found lacking, envied those who succeeded for safety of no lay-offs and a steady paycheck. Eventually, I found that real security was in owning your own business – the main problem was there was no guarantee of a pay check – but the work was very steady. That is not to denigrate the plight of those folks who are now laid off, or being required to work while un-paid. If I had done that to my employees – I might have been facing a jail sentence. It’s too bad the governmental employees don’t have the same protections that those in the private sector have.
So open the government for two weeks and get these employees their paychecks. Or pay them on the first of the month while the Mad King holds them hostage. Why should they be punished, so “Cheeto-lini” can impress his work-wife, Ann Coulter.
“Oh Ann, can you feel the big, huge wall I’m building? It’s all for you, baby..”
We put up a board like this in the restroom of our hardware store where, as a retiree, I work part time. It was originally meant for our contractor customers to pin their business cards but it quickly took on this look as even though the government keeps telling us we’re no longer in a recession, we still see people suffering because so many construction and factory jobs that paid real wages have not returned. Meanwhile our restaurants have the most highly educated wait-staff anywhere with many holding masters degrees.
It’s always interesting to follow the “money”. Who’s making a profit (or something else of value) off the closure? Maybe the GOP’s “small government” meme? Maybe the Dems are, ahem, demonstrating how well that doesn’t work? Is somebody rich getting richer supplying “emergency labor”?
Actually Donald John Trump DOES need a wall – a 50 foot wide, 8 foot high wall with an 8 inch diameter post set midway along it with rings mounted 4 feet from the ground for shackle attachment. It should be constructed on the front lawn of the White house in full view of the populace so they could witness how America deals with Russian traitors.
Just a suggestion, you understand. (if it were televised, Donnie John might even break his former ratings record, which is all he ever wants, anyway.)
They’ve been damaging the government, seriously, for two years and couldn’t get their way with majorities, so now “the help” has to pay for idiot bosses again. Pure Trump.
BTW: it isn’t that easy for feds on furlough to work other jobs in many of those positions most affected.
The really bad thing that most people do not know, that at least for some federal jobs, you have to get permission to get another job. Can’t do that when the government is shut down. However, they can collect unemployment. I know, because I am a furloughed federal worker, and I think both sides are being spoiled children.

The workers are all thankful to Trump for giving them a month off. A nice extended holiday.
