The strip was originally called CLASS ACT, and focused mostly on the school. The kids’ roles were equal and Ms. Payne had a larger part to play. Maria was already pushing her way into the lead role, so the title was changed and her parents were added. We didn’t show their faces for the first couple of months. They were finally shown on Sep 17th, when I was sure how they looked.
The concept that went with the new title was to have her writing diary entries, showing the way she saw the day’s events- and then have the flashback show how things really happened. This gag may be the only one we actually did that followed the plan. I still wish we’d done more that way.
