I don’t quite understand the metaphor. Is he an insomniac, so trying to sleep is ‘work’ for him? Or in bed he over-worries about going to work before he actually falls asleep?
I interpreted it to mean he dreams about work, so he is staying up rather than falling asleep and having those dreams.
That explains the desire to stay up a little longer better than I have ever seen before. As soon as you wake up you have to get ready to go to work again.
