This reminds me of a book that I read maybe 50 years ago. The main character was trying to survive a plague, but another character was trying to write a book. The would-be author could never get by the first sentence, but kept thinking about it. Luann may be experiencing her own version of writer’s block, Not sure, but the book might have been, “The Plague” by Albert Camus.
What is the point to today’s episode. Yesterday Bernice had Luann all fired up to write so we ought to be seeing her write but she seems to be staring off into space. When her father tries to encourage her, Luann insists that she “lost and clueless.” This seems strange because two weeks ago she was quite able to ad lib diary entries for the Vale creep. Why is she having so much trouble unless the author has suddenly realized that over the last three days Luann has shown too much agency and needs to be knocked some. Or that was padding to fill out the week. In either case we should have seen Luann doing something and not dithering.
About to be 20, the most indefinable period there is for developing Ego’s. Being aware of all one doesn’t know is actually a sign of growth. Lu is entering a phase which will help define herself, perhaps writing a “humor” story will not only be hilarity ensues but also very helpful to Luann. Time, in Luannverse time, will tell.
Older and aware that the sensation of being lost and clueless will stay forever in a side of your mind. Like a lot of great comedian, deep down Luann is really sad. Let’s hope she’ll be able to make others happier with her art.
Then, Luann, when you get much older there is always the possibility that you could develop dementia and the being lost in a fog will be back…
.
Greetings, y’all from Pebble Beach! Tomorrow, Carmel By The Sea. Friday, on the way home, maybe stopping at Anderson’s Split Pea Restaurant in Santa Nella…
Luann needs to see a job counselor. Someone who can talk to her about her strengths and skill. Bernice needs to see a therapist. Some one who can tell her that narcissists/psychopaths can have meaningful careers outside of a state/federal penitentiary.
Luann does not actually find anything humorous about her diary. It was painful for her then and it is still painful. Just because Bernice finds her pain funny, does not mean Luann will ever see it that way.
Good grief! Bernice has been encouraging and supportive in this arc and people still hate her and blame her for Luann’s negative feelings about herself! Wonder how many of these people have real friends who tell it like it is, or say what they think you want to hear.
Luann needs to decide what SHE wants to do. Not what Bernice, or Tara or Ms. Fogarty tell her she should do. She wouldn’t feel so lost if she listened to herself more.
This has a lot of similarities to the season premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks that came out today. Specifically: at one point in the show the characters wanted to prove a certain event happened, so they access the personal log of Ensign Boimler (since their captain’s log had already been corrupted by nefarious parties and they needed an untouched record, and Boimler is an anal-retentive little brown-noser that was trying to mimic the senior officers by keeping a log.) Problem was, Boimler’s log was so full of absurd minutiae and descriptions of ridiculous problems that happened to him, that it couldn’t possibly be taken seriously by the authorities. His friends kept skipping ahead to different entries:
“This planet’s atmosphere is giving me really bad gas…”
“They caught me sniffing the captain’s chair again…”
“An alien bird ate my combadge…”
“I dropped my tricorder in the toilet again…”
Seriously, I had to pause the episode from laughing so hard. I love that show.
I have a problem with this pity party Luann is staging. She plants herself in the middle of the house so everyone coming and going can show awe and appreciation for her age 13 tape recordings, that, in her opinion, show what a tragic love life she has had. When Frank starts laughing at them she’s really going to be upset.
It’s way time for G & K to stop picking on Luann. Tara got Lu into some trouble but also is potentially a good influence as she nudges Lu into the world.
