Ughhh, as jack said, she’s either sweating school or trying to help others out by analyzing THEIR problems. Bernice doesn’t take time for herself. Bern, it’s OK to take some “me” time. You don’t have to over-achieve all the time.

Interesting that she only heard what she wanted to hear from that. I doubt that Jack would have told her to read a book, but that’s what she got out of it.

Bern learning about History is always a great read.

Bern is retreating into her own world again. Hopefully G & K have a surprise for us in the next day or two – we shouldn’t leave Bern like this.

Actually, world history or biology would be great. Lots of battles, struggles, lust, reproduction, betrayal, plot twists in both.

So far this has been a long arc to nowhere. Tiffany has stalled on her quest for maturity, Gunther and Bets have hung a “Do Not Disturb” sign on their hide-a-way, and Luann is still treading water in her pool of life.

She could go shopping instead. At the pet store. That’s the saddest, emptiest aquarium I have ever seen.

I think it’s safe to say Bernice is living deep in her Private Idaho.

I read that book. Spoiler alert, Bernice, the dinosaurs don’t make it.

I peeked at the ending. The lawyers did it.

As a kid, our neighbors across the road had a set of encyclopedias. I’d get lost reading those. Nice pictures too.

She’s going to find a note or photo in the book that leads us on another three weeks of unfunny strips.

I wish I still had my freshman history book. It was the best cure for insomnia ever!

Of course Bernice would reach for a text book. What were you expecting,a “bodice ripper”?

Sort of rare to see a World History (or even Western History) book. More common when I started teaching. Now they tend to be World Civilization or Western Civilization. ‘History’ has become associated with an emphasis on wars and rulers (and in the case of Western History read ‘dead white men’). There came a revolution in thinking – literature, music, architecture, philosophy and other forms of culture are part of the human story… Oh, yeah, and not every important person is white and half the world isn’t male. So, change from history courses to civilization courses. Of course, some publishers just retitled the same book as Western Civilization rather than Western History. (And don’t get me started on fact all historians have a narrow field of expertise. Out of our niche we can be dumb. Western Civ. text gets three authors (so you don’t have to split royalties too far) and each does great in his/her niche – but can be huge errors when you get them writing outside their field of expertise. Kept a list for a while of errors I found in college textbooks.)

And once again, GnK have Bernice escaping into her headspace. Exhibiting avoidance behavior after avoidance behavior.

So she picks up a history book. Is that meaningful to the story? Will we see some period piece daydream involving Bernice and… pick one… or two?

Ha ha nerdy girl likes books.

Maybe a novel would be better. Like, citing the greatest example among the strips, “War and Peace”… I really hope Luann comes to Bernice’s room and drags her on some weird/hilarious adventure with Tara and Dez. But the fact that Bernice seems unable to find a positive hobby on her own, one that cheers her up and is unrelated to studying, is sad.

Anyone else thinking what I am thinking? That poor fish needs some plants and a castle or something!

This has been so INCREDIBLY BORING. The Ben character is boring. He needs to be just abandoned altogether. Maybe him and the kid could get hit by a bus? Jack is REALLY boring. I am convinced he doesn’t have any attraction to girls at all. He’s like a big muscle bound girlfriend to all these characters. I liked the idea of Bernice being more outgoing but now she’s boring again. It’s like the last two weeks have been an exercise in being mediocre. Not interesting at all. The only reason I keep looking at it is I keep thinking they have to go SOMEWHERE with SOMETHING, but noooo they just keep up with the same bland storylines. Storylines that never finish by the way. I need to google G&K and see if they look as boring as their comic strip.

Another boring week of Bernice

I don’t think reading a history book is what Jack had in mind Berniece! You need to get up and get moving to clear your head.

It’s really so sad they’ve made her so……I don’t know….I don’t have a word for it. Strange? Too strong. Odd? Troubling? In need of a therapist? The older she gets on the time line, the more she’s going off the rails in slow motion.

I teach college History. It’s great but she needs to have someone hit her upside her head with that book…..

Actually the idea of reading a college history book with all its illustrations and ideas seems a great way to get one’s mind off of an existing stress, at least to this nerd. However it still will not help Bernice get rid of the source of her anxiety over meeting her brother. I am waiting to see how the story is brought to that point, who is involved, and will it happen this week, if at all.

Are we still on this Arc? Its making me wish Ann Awful was back.

Ahh, nothing so …engaging… as a first-year history text (typically, world history or Western history). I should know. I was a history major in college. And, yes, I still have the book all these many years later….

So, all of last week was more treading water. Bernice has a serious problem… something that makes her hide behind garbage bins, grimacing, when she sees a random male person walking by. She’s got issues (7 of them), and reading a history book ain’t gonna fix a thing.

And, as much as we wished that Jack could be someone to confide with, that was a bust. His only advice was “exercise” and she’s not even doing that. And now she gets to read all about Nero, or Cromwell, or Napoleon, all while her 7 issues continue to fester. Disappointed in her, and the meandering direction of this “arc”.

What do we never learn from? Oh yeah, history.

I know you can get lost in a good book … but that is not one I would have chosen.

And here I was thinking that I was the only one who liked reading their old history textbooks. Only difference being is that I like reading the one I had in my senior year of high school instead. I tell ya, that stuff definitely gets more and more interesting as you get older…

Well this is going nowhere slowly. All that innuendo and exercise talk from last week just gone. Ben’s practically gone. Back to books.

But if Bern sees something in that World History book about Ben, I’m quitting this strip forever. (Won’t happen, tho.)

I’m kind of disappointed that this is being played for a joke—but reading non-fiction so often is. (See: Progressive commercial; “Who reads books about submarines?”)

She opens it up to realize the pages have been glued shut and the interior was hollowed out containing a stash of cash. Either that or every page has a picture reminding her of her brother or Jack.

Why didn’t she finish her history test?

Hmmm, did she bring all her books to Luann’s?Ho, boy, I can see the daydreams now, or nightmares. Antony and Cleopatra? This could be a fun week!

It seems this whole strip has become formulaic. It’s lost that something, something I can’t put my finger on, but the mojo I remember just ain’t there no mo’.

It’s got a very strange “ending”.

The author never bothers to tie up all the loose threads.

For a supposedly temporary stint at the DeGroots, she is pretty settled in. After all, who would unpack books and set them up in a bookcase? I think most people would leave them in the box until they find a more permanent residence.

Bernice needs to get laid. THAT will clear her head.

Why would Bernice pack up her library and bring it to Luann’s? She CAN go home and pick up stuff. Doesn’t make sense. This arc is as flat as Jack’s head.

Bern is just escaping from one jail cell to another.

Interesting reading. Much of it reads like neighborhood disputes but often less killing.
