I’m happy she didn’t cause a toilet malfunction with all the towels she was thinking of covering the thing with; I imagined one of them getting pulled into the toilet while it was flushing…
They ought to invent an illuminated hood light button for nighttime wanderings/snacks/breakfast. Nobody likes to wake up or shuffle to/into bright kitchen light. A lot of people leave that light on all the time. Mine is not on the hood but underneath the upper cabinets. Always on. Led = low energy, low cost. The only time we turn on the kitchen light is when we need to see something clearly. The last time we turned on kitchen light was when husband needed to look under the sink to find the source of water leak weeks ago. The funny thing is when we had guests, THEY turn on the bright kitchen light every time they enter the kitchen. We were like vampires and went ARRGHH.
So Bernice knows where the bread is kept, where the toaster is kept, where the plates are kept, where the cups or mugs are kept, where the tea is kept and where the flatware is kept. Unless she is going to leave a pile of dishes in the sink, she must also know where the dish washing supplies are kept as well as the towels or drying rack.
I have been in numerous kitchens other than my own and every one of them had their own systems, conventions, and places to hide completely necessary items. All the owners of these other kitchens could be set down blindfolded in them and reach out to grab whatever was needed. They also had reasonable explanations for why things were where the were. But for anyone else, the place would be a treasure hunt trying to find something like a tea bag.
I don’t mind humorous comments, but I like to remember that the toon is supposed to be comedic as well, and I have to admit I laughed when I saw today’s set of panels. Bernice trying to be as quiet as she can, only to turn on the stove fan in a darkened kitchen. Perfect example of Rule 1 in Murphy’s Law, in summary: “Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong, at the absolute worst time.” I am hoping someone wakes up and basically puts Bernice’s mind at ease. That would be a nice way to finish the week. Or not. Could be even worse.
Last week’s “Luann Again” was a perfect example of how to write funny comedy. Each day’s story was short and brisk with a strong punchline. This week of Luann has not been short, brisk or funny. This is kind of observational humor except there are no observations, except from us saying that Bernice is making it hard for herself. Karen can’t write and Greg no longer cares.
See, this is a perfect example of just what people are complaining about when they say they miss Ann. Many of us would prefer watching a hate sink triumph than the sheer boredom G&K have chosen to subject us too. Ann was an evil person but she was interesting! There was something to talk about with her. This is just a big steaming pile of nothing. The only this I can say is that, for once, Luanns not the one feeding it to us. Horray for the small miracles I guess.
Besides being only mildly amusing… I think what doesn’t make sense about this entire thing is – How is it that she is Luann’s best friend since grade school. Has had how many dozens (if not hundreds) of sleepovers and yet still is so uncomfortable in this house? My best friend moved into my house my senior year of HS and just blended in with little snags because history already made her family and gave her knowledge on how the house ran.
Bernice is right. Don’t turn on the lights because the the lights are LOUD! I’m not even going to wonder how Bern managed to make it to kitchen without lights.
Infrared Eyeglasses?
Oh. And I said the other day. Avocado toast, anyone? ;)
Bernice is so used to the constant 24/7 noise of a college dormitory, that she is now hypersensitive to sounds in a quiet environment. This does actually happen to people. But being Bernice, she thinks everyone else is as sound sensitive as she is.The final punchline of this week’s arc, will be Bernie the next morning apologizing for making all the noise. And the DeGroot’s saying none of them heard a thing.
I really love awkward Bernice♡. I know this arc shows how anxious, shy and full of complexes she is. But there is something really cute about these tons of problems. It shows how Bernice is still a young girl unprepared for adulthood and with many things to learn. So different from the “Know-it-all” mask she wears every day ♡.
This has just gotten so silly. Bern lived in a dorm room with a gazillion other girls, and she’s Luann’s best friend for ages and has stayed over plenty, so why all this angst? And the whole thing about “ewww, it’s Brad’s old room”. What?!? It was Pru’s room for a long time in between Brad and now, so it has certainly been de-cootied. Please let’s move on.
The parents are old, and lived through 2 children. As long as the sounds she makes don’t sound like house destruction, she can pretty much make all the noise she wants, they are amune to it.I’m pretty sure Greg has done the marching-band-through-Luann’s-bedroom-while-she-sleeps gag. So no problem there either.
Bernice has been friends with Luann for how many years? She doesn’t know the little quirks and sounds of the home after how many years visiting there? I think I knew more about my BF’s home than I did my own.
Ok, Bernice is still being Bernice; over assessing and not relaxing a little. Hopefully she learns to chill a little while as Casa DeGroot (surprising that Dez didn’t cause more chill, job I guess). So money is on Nancy coming into the kitchen and hopefully providing the nice chill moment. It’d make a nice learn thing if Bernice learned to be a little more like Oddball.
This is why Bernice can no longer be considered a main character. She is a deadly dull personality whose cute little butt is just too tight for her body.
Boring and just really annoying now. She was self conscious about using the bathroom but not about taking some of their bread and tea. Try being consistent…or better yet just get off this whole story line.
Monday & Tuesday was bedroom. Wednesday bathroom. Thursday kitchen.
Friday she will be back in her bedroom getting dressed…last panel will be Puddles at her door with lease in his mouth.
Saturday will be in kitchen with the family. They will ask Bernice how her first night went. Last panel will be Bernice breaking ‘fourth wall’ …looking at us to answer the family’s question.
Even though the running gag is perhaps being a tad overstated after all these days, the message for me is still the same:
1. Bernice is a very nice, young adult who is trying (as she always seems to) to do the “right” thing as she perceives it…. often with comedic overshoot into a bit of excessively complex actions.
2. Bernice is (a bit excessively) behaving in a fashion to show that she respects and appreciates the DeGroots, and is thankful for their kindness in being allowed to stay there.
3. Bernice is trying to finagle a way (again, a somewhat over-the-top fashion) to still follow her own “comfortable for her” routine in the midst of a new household where she thinks the whole household are very light, late sleepers compared to her own circadian rhythms.
One potential funny conclusion to this week’s worth of panels could be…. on Saturday’s installment we find out from a sleepy-eyed Luann, who just happens to have been lounging around on the davenport in the living room for quite a while… that both her Mom and Dad had gotten up for work around 4:30…. and had been gone the whole time.
Take home message…. most folks can and do have the ability to sleep through “normal-level” early morning noises of others…. and most families have a mix of early birds and late sleepers…. and it simply works because no one is typically so hypersensitive to noises when they sleep.
To make this arc more interesting – maybe next week we will hear a nice chat with Nancy where Bernice says something about her family. We lack background on most of the Luann cast – excepting Gunther, Tiff & Les. It would be interesting to know where Tara lives and anything about her family – if she has one anymore.
Aw, come on, guys! I actually laughed a little at this. Been there, done that. Try so hard to be QUIET, and sure enough, everything you do sounds SO LOUD! After all the drama with Ann, I’m perfectly happy to have just a little break before they zip off into something else.
Yeah.. Those fans can get pretty noisy. Especially when the motor on the inside of them that makes it run starts wearing out. No need to freak, however, as it’s more than likely the DeGroots still won’t hear it. You know, since they’re all still asleep in their rooms with all the doors closed…

So Bern is not only selfish, but I’m starting to wonder if she’s an idiot-savant. Who can work in the kitchen and make toast and tea quietly?
She also made such a big deal about not waking anyone when peeing, so NOW she’s going to the kitchen?
Bern has proven to do whatever Bern wants to do – she let that guy stay over in her dorm room, she enforces rules like she’s an entitled autocrat.
She’ll wake everyone up and it will turn into a thing.
