Toni's wedding dress was designed by contest winner philip gust of redwood city, CA
January 17, 2018
Are we going to have a week of various wedding participants turned 90 degrees from upright? I hate that when they do that. If you have a laptop or a handheld device you can turn it 90 degrees but with a full size 23 inch (58cm) screen with a desktop computer you have to turn yourself 90 degrees and at age 70 that is no longer that easy to do.
’tis a wonderful dress
Once again, congrats, Mr. Gust!!! Toni saw your dress there in the store, and knew it was the one for her!! Nice work!!!
…And With the combined efforts from yourself and the Evanses, you can now proudly boast a “Phillip Gust original”, and can lay claim to being the “Bob Mackie” of the “Greater Pitts Statistical Area”!
By the way, I will say that Philip Gust did a good job designing Toni’s dress, in my opinion.
Sideways to fill the entire frame.
The dress looks nice as drawn by Greg.
I think there was a “trade off” to be had, here, in showing it this way, in regard to the dimension challenges of the panel.
I believe they were going for a “close up” of the details, and if it were depicted as in yesterday’s, we might not be able to get the effect that this angle would give, as it would have to fit the “height” of the “top and bottom” of the panels, as opposed to being able to see it more closely, using the “length” of the panels…
What a cheesy way to sell a “collectable” and who wants a collectable with See more designs at …
What a way to waste time and drag it out.
Nice dress but boring!
@Flash GordonYou can save the strip and open it in a picture viewer. On PCs I recommend IRFANVIEW. An L or an R will turn a picture 90 degrees. No contortion necessary.
“A Sudden Gust”
“Dress To Impress (part II)”
“She Walks In”
“Getting The Grand Co-ture”
“My Bride And Joy”
(And just strictly in view of the humor of the situation, as has been brought up:)
“Stealing The Bases Of Brad’s Heart”
“A Lay Person”
“You Can Call Me Vertic-al” (♪♫)
Great, and now I think I see how the week will progress. Presentation is the soul of event. Already stated my opinion about how beautiful the dress is on a beautifully drawn character.
Get iRotate, it’s free.
Slow news day?
The dress “translated” from the designer’s rendering to the comic strip rather well, I think. And the more I look at it, the more it looks like something Toni might choose. It isn’t overly fussy, and it has classical elements plus a bit of a “wow” factor. Made up in a good fabric, this would look lovely in real life. Nice job, Philip!
Just beautiful and flattering a dress—bravo Philip Gust, I foresee a degree in Fashion Design in your future. :-)
Light yellow, not white!
I know it is simple to fix, but that is dangerous to tell an average user. lol
Anybody out there know of a Toni in real life?
This should have been Sunday’s (yesterday’s) strip…
Use “Ctrl+Alt+arrow right” will rotate the screen
The dress is exactly what I would imagine Toni would wear. Good job, Phillip!
I agree with Flash Gordon. I, too, am 70 years old with a desk top and just finished cranking my head around so I could see the dress! lol
Screw you, Sideways complainers …….. this is a beautiful dress. Well done Phil !!! (If you all wanna see it right way round, just click back to yesterday !!!).
I love the ribbons instead of a veil. Dress looks great. Well done!
Very nice design overall! Though now I’m wondering if Greg either forgot he gave Toni a tattoo, or he figured he no longer likes it :).
Other than getting his design in the wedding day series, does Mr. Gust win anything else? (An autographed copy of the Brad and Toni Saga?)
jackreacher said, about 6 hours agoJust hold Ctrl and Alt & tap arrow key, pick one, until it verticalizes – repeat until back to normalWOW!! Thank you very much! I’m 74 and I learned something (very) new today.
You can purchase a “high quality print” of this strip for $39.95, and then spend the $190. to frame it in black metal, and then hang it anyway you want. Every true fan of this strip should be thrilled to have one of these on the wall. I assume she will be horizontal sometime in the near future, just turned differently. Or maybe not.
Perfect dress Mr. Gust. :)
Whoo hoo! Standing O
gotto do what the Syndicate says!
In our Sunday paper her dress was pale yellow. Geez! Who’s responsible for such screw ups?
Beautiful! And thank you, Mr. G.
Would make a good bookmark.
(SIGH) Brad DeGoot. What a Lucky, LUCKY, Guy. A Guy that has gone from SLOB to Hero Fire Fighter. A Guy that has selflessly saved many lives. A Guy that has FOUND his TRUE Soul Mate, Toni, a Young Woman of Strength, Ingenuity, FEARLESSNESS, and Dare I say it, BEAUTY. Congratulations to the BOTH of YOU, and May Live Long, Happy, Fruitful Lives together. Now….,(Sniff) If You’ll excuse Me, (Sob) I have “something” in My eye….., (Mordock runs away Sobbing Uncontrollably)
Thanks Jackreacher ! Even at 79 I learn something everyday!
Her beauty will fade with time, but, her inner beauty will always shine
Yesterday, someone asked what century that I was living in, expecting a veil, rather than those streamers… well, the last wedding that I attended, was my brother’s… He and his wife just celebrated their 25th anniversary, this fall! :p
today’s strip dedicated for those who don’t get the Sunday funnies.
Brings me back to Elizabeth’s wedding in ‘For Better or For Worse’.
ust hold Ctrl and Alt & tap arrow key, pick one, until it verticalizes – repeat until back to normal
Hey, thanks! When I log onto Comics Kingdom later today, I’ll share that info with my friends on the Funky Winkerbean board! (Providing it works there.)
Turn your newspaper 90 degrees, clockwise. Those were the days. ;)
Not a wrist corsage?
Not on a wedding dress, No
Is it me, an illusion, or does the dusty shade of robin’s egg behind Toni become slightly lighter as one ascends from the base to the arch top so that her head is in more light? Sheriff?
No, no, no. Brad should not have seen the dress before the wedding – it is bad luck and they don’t need that.
Pretty nice of the Evans’ to honor the winner, Mr Gust, with a full strip drawing of his design today.
To Flash Gordon — do what I do. Learn to read sideways. ;)
in a way is her………………….. very simple yet stylish but puts 2( or 3 ) things that makes it unique and colorful BUT not too colorful, just adds beauty to the simple style
Absolutely hysterical today!
This just gets dumber. I guess the cartoonist wants a few weeks (months) off!!!!!!!!
Where’s the veil?
Awww, Puddins has to turn his head to look at the picture..
Save picture to desktop, open with paint, rotate 90 degrees and view as desired.
Lovely wedding dress. Very good job, Phillip.
While the dress looks nice on Toni, I believe Greg chose the most simply cut and design because it is the easiest to draw. He’d be drawing the same dress for several strips so he chose the simplest dress. There were many other dresses that were better suited for Toni but were probably too much work for Greg. However, since Toni is a simple girl who does not dress anything stylish or fancy, I suppose the dress is another reason it fits Toni. When it’s Luann’s turn, gotta wonder if he will again have a contest and then choose another simple dress? Because Luann definitely is not a simple girl.
Just hold Ctrl and Alt & tap arrow key.
Did not work on my HP/Win10
A nice, timeless design! I like it.
The original has a realistic body shape, but this version has that creepy thing they do in Disney cartoons, where the eyes are wider than the waist.
Shocking in a comic featuring adolescent girls struggling with body image.
The dress looks wonderful, Mr Gust. Congratulations. :)
Mr. Gust did draw a very pretty wedding dress, and Greg has used it successfully with Toni.
However, today’s comic is about as interesting to me as watching an ice cube melt. Perhaps it is more a “female” thing and a lot of female readers will be more excited about today’s comic. Or, perhaps I am just an old, furry-faced curmudgeon and all the other readers of the comic will really be excited about today’s comic. I do not really know.
Lovely dress. But personally, I’d still liked to have seen a veil.
Great job, Phil!
Very much Toni’s style. Congrats Brad and Toni!
I don’t think the seeing the bride before the wedding is a big deal, but the bridegroom seeing her in her dress for the first time IS a big deal! I wish it hadn’t been in a back changing room, which is anti-climatic. I prefer the aisle as it is a true entrance for her to be seen by her groom, but even if they had seen each other outside, or in a nicer room would have been more special. Of course, for Brad, it will be special no matter what :>)
Doesn’t work on an Apple… no “Control, Alt, et al”
Did she not ever get an engagement ring? If so, why isn’t she wearing it now?
1) Hope Mr. Gust also gets the t-shirt2) Hope it’s warm in Pitts, or she’ll be freezing.3) Hope everyone is having a Beautiful day!(Does anyone know how to rotate the view so I don’t have to keep turning my head sideways?)
I want to like the dress but I just can’t. It’s not Toni’s personality or color palette. Sorry. You need to take the bad with the good. This is definitely not good – people voted for this? Ugh.
have the the two of them been sleeping together?just wonderin’
did I hit the max word limit?
what I meant to say was that there have been some Christmastime flashbacks, but beyond that I’d need a memory jolt.
thank god it’s not strapless…
did that. every arrow key on my board. nada.
well done Mr. Gust! Toni looks lovely.
As the dress is the culmination of a contest, it’s sort of a necessity that it receive at least one “Spotlight Shot” – I doubt any of the other strips between now and the 11th will be presented in a similar format.
I’m not sure how much cartoonists earn these days, the heady times of high newspaper circulation are long gone.
Probably not as much as most people think, though.
Yeah, I copied it into Word, flipped it, then pulled sideways to add 100 lbs for midlife weight gain. She’ll still look stunning. But I thought Miss Emily said she was going to wear her hair in a French braid, not semi-loose as shown.
Nice job, Mr. Gust. Nice job, indeed
looks like Greg didn’t have time to draw the strip for today.
Wonderful. The dress I would want!!
Beautiful Gown… Excellent Design! Love the color coordination.Looking forward to the Wedding ‘photos’….
It is beautiful but I’d have expected something with sleeves since it’s a December wedding.
Thanks. It works…but…it turns the whole wallpaper and any other open page also. But something to remember!! thanks!
Next up: design the honeymoon negilgee.
Thank you, JackReacher. That was easy!
I just hope and pray that neither TJ nor Toni’s brother doesn’t screw things up!
If it was Tiffany, I’d probably get a tattoo. LOL
man that’s some hideous hairdo you got there toni. I’m sorry for you. and those ribbons, ugh. Sorry you couldn’t afford a veil, it would have looked heaps prettier than streamers.
oh and i’m also deeply sorry for your bridesmaid’s terrible lack of fashion, especially in the bridesmaid’s dresses department. better luck next time, though hopefully there won’t be one so this is your only chance and you blew it (ok, no, luann blew it because she just assumed you’d be fine with it, didn’t even ask if it was ok or did I miss a day in there?)
good advice. Thanks
Toni is beautiful!
Oh, yes! One fine dress!
(Toni in it helps, too.)
surly you complainers can tell what she looks like in the picture!!
“………Sorry, but that is clueless. The person voted as the winner needed to be announced on a weekday as well as Sunday for people who get only weekday comics and for ones who get only Sunday comics………..”.“…….No, he definitely drew today’s strip. Compare it to yesterday’s: in yesterday’s, Toni is walking, and her left hand is slightly swaying. Today, Toni is standing still and her left hand is resting against her side………Plus, as others pointed out, the contest winner’s Sunday paper may not include the “Luann” strip, hence today’s “sideways” panel………”
“………Actually, according to today’s FB post, it is as I was postulating above, two things: One, to give Mr. Phillip Gust his proper credit, and Two, to give everyone a chance to see the full length gown, close up (given the dimensional challenges of doing so, in the space of a comic panel, while properly revealing its details, at the same time)……”-—————————————————————————————————————-
OK OK… I got it! …..indeed they are different…..my mistake…. mea culpa…..
I like the dress. It “looks” like Toni. Simple, elegant, no fuss, yet understated in its beauty.
a designer with good taste and a bride with drop – dead good looks: a winning combination. Great job, phil.and kudos to Greg for putting it on Toni.
