Luann’s portfolio is way too conventional for this art teacher, who values originality above talent. A collection of 17 all-black pages, and 16 copies of one picture, do show the “out of the box” thinking that he values highly. In his opinion, those two students “created art”, whereas Luann merely drew images.

You watch, Luann will get a ‘C’. and blackout-boy will get an ‘A’

Who’s this joker who believes that he can judge what is and isn’t art.

My two cents on the whole debate about Greg’s teacher…. 1) A teacher has a right and requirement to have students pay attention…. so telling Greg to not doodle seems like an appropriate idea, 2) A teacher (especially an art teacher) belittling a student about his art is not so appropriate. If this teacher really DID belittle Greg in class about it, that was not appropriate, 3) If the teacher potentially embarrassed Greg by calling attention to his doodling while in class, this could be a reason for a “grudge” but it seems a bit far-fetched…. and yet the teacher calling attention to inappropriate behavior would be a suitable action for the teacher, 4) Greg probably doesn’t have a “grudge” so to speak, but instead may simply be pointing out more the subjective nature of art in general.

”If she had simply told him to stop doodling, that would have been understandable and even justifiable. BUT, according to Greg, she went beyond that, to demean his doodles as “not art…"^Exactly!!

“She was probably annoyed he was goofing off in class,…”^But Dave’s point was that the issue wasn’t any “reprimands”. She (as Dave already said) went beyond just school matters. The point made was that she “overstepped” her bounds, in trying to “dictate” what was acceptable in matters of personal taste and ambition…things that are not up to her to dictate….

Do lefties raise their right hand in response to a teacher’s question? It has been too long since I’ve been in a classroom, so I can’t remember. I notice Luann is holding up her right hand. One Eye is barely holding up his left hand.

Again, the issue wasn’t on “how the rules were broken” (if any even were .! I don’t even think that that was what was being related… It could have been during “personal use” time. Or it could have been that he had finished his assignment and was just filling his time until the teacher gave further directions…)….

This COULD be a pleasant surprise. Luann seems to have some talent for drawing, unlike the two shmoes she’s sitting with.

Don’t know how many more ways I can explain- the issue brought up had nothing to do with whether or not any “correction” was justified. The point being made by the author/creator had to do with the subjective criticism of someone else’s tastes…… and is not a case of someone “can do no wrong”……..

First you have to define “art”

Well then you didn’t teach art, as that is subjective. There’s not much to be biased about in subjects like math, history, science, etc. Art is all opinion. ^Well, then, you haven’t been in a classroom, lately, in one form or another. These days, “opinion” is sneaking into there. Agendas are being pushed to change certain norms and conventions, things that parents get infuriated with, as then it takes away their right to raise their children and instill them with certain values…things that are not for the school to teach, but are for the parent to decide….

Both Copernicus and Galileo (scientists) were punished by the Church for their heresy of declaring that the earth revolved around the sun, rather than the view accepted by the Church that had the sun revolving around the earth.-Galileo was even tried by the Inquisition, and his work was banned for years after his death. He was not allowed a normal Church burial till many years later.-I noticed that you commented on how long Greg Evans is assumed to have carried a grudge against his art teacher. It took until Pope John Paul II until the Church said Galileo was ok…

“Well then you didn’t teach art, as that is subjective.” ^Art may be “subjective”, but it’s also not something where you get to tell someone that their chosen (and favorite) medium is not the “right” one. – Much in the same way that if it were a music class, and the person were rehearsing a genre that you didn’t think was all that great, it’s not your place to tell someone that it’s not. You certainly can hold that view, and find others who share it, or, If asked, you can share your opinion with someone else to that end, but you can’t go around and impose your judgement upon them personally… – I don’t particularly care for today’s “mainstream” pop music (more so the “Lady GaGa”s and the “Robin Thicke”s of the world), and I especially don’t like the way that the mainstream industry is losing the “human touch” in making music (i.e. the “cookie cutter approach” of rolling them out like clones, almost), but it doesn’t mean that I can go tell my employees that their music is “garbage”. I could say: “We can’t have music in here right now, turn it down, please!” if it were going to be a detriment to the work environment (and walk ins). But I can’t say: ’Turn down that “trash”!".

No. I’m talking about “pushing certain topics within school subjects”. Going from teaching facts and figures to trying to push “agendas” into the lessons. It certainly could affect someone when it comes to religion, though. And it’s not about “changing schools”. It may even be found in the next school, if one were to do that….

A varied array of examples, indeed!!! – And there’s also the doodles found within the Lennon family, in particular one from a young child that became the basis for a song (or two)… – Not to mention the “doodles” of the then “Senior Lennon”, John…

My point in providing this information is not to compare the church banning of Galileo to Greg Evans displeasure at a teacher, but to respond to your idea that science, math and subjects like them are ‘objective’ , with not much to be biased about, as opposed to art.-Maybe this comparison will work better if I bring it into more recent times. Right now in the US, for example, there are still elected school district board members (and parents) who argue passionately that ‘creation science’ needs to be taught in public schools, rather than or in addition to, evolution.-And there are many public figures who argue that whatever climate change we are experience today has nothing to do with human intervention and pollution, so that should not be taught in schools because the idea only exists to undermine capitalism.-Science is no more ‘objective’ than art. Agendas are everywhere…

Lu, in your pre-school class you always were kind, in order to support the kids’ efforts.If art is like college writing classes, this critique is going to be merciless. To inspire you, you know. Develop a thick skin NOW.

I was referring to wonderful examples of how one could easily “dismiss” work as being of no benefit, and yet the end result (as time has pointed out) is that other works were inspired by these….I was referring to Julian Lennon’s “doodles” in particular, as they were the basis for some songs. But John, by “extension”, (as I was also mentioning) also had examples…

Given the circumstance in that particular arc, Nancy’s mother was “calling a spade a spade” in regards to Tiffany. Though there were also moments that showed she had a “soft spot” and a vulnerability. Nonetheless, It was Tiffany who boasted about Luann being out of the camp, and was planning to “make a move” on Quill. at the time.So naturally , Nancy would react to Tiffany’s dealings in this way….

to illustrate what the teacher did to Greg, it is like a student in 4th grade on a math class, and was told to solve 1.5 plus 1.5 and he puts 6/2 as the answer, after doing calculations in paper and the teacher than says to the student “you are wrong, is supposed to be 3; and should have done it in your head, you will never be a good mathematician”

Why do I get the feeling that this teacher has an idea about what art is, and it is not going to be very broad. Lets face it, sometimes you have to just draw the apple and set aside graphically grasping the essence of the apples anguish.

“The art teacher said doodles would not be considered art for her class, and it’s her class, so there you go.” ^Round and round we go….. okay, I feel I must respond to this one: Now you know she wasn’t referring to it as “not art” simply because it wasn’t in her “lesson plan”. She made a comment about a personal preference. Again, no one is saying she was wrong for telling him to “stop doodling”. Even Mr. Evans wasn’t saying anything like that (which can be shown, if one looks directly at his FB post)!

And sometimes you need a map and a “trail of bread crumbs” to make sure you don’t get lost on the way…

Part of what gets you to strange worlds and space is words. The other part is math and science…

in itself, generic brands are same or even superior to brand names at times, BUT people are willing to pay extra for “the image of quality and reliability”, and also people equal price with quality…. in a TV show they showed someone offering a “5 dollar pie” and a “2 dollar pie” (they were actually the same, only difference was that one was made round and the other one was square), and over 80% of the people “thought” the expensive one was better than the cheap ones, saying things like this one is smoother, or has a sweeter flavor or it did not crumbled when I used my spoon and so on, and it was not the shape, in the middle of the survey, they exchanged saying which one was the “expensive one”, power games of the mind

most people are willing to pay big bucks for any real Picasso drawing, but would never pay big bucks for something painted by John Doe of East Los Angeles even if you liked more what John Doe painted

The point of it also was to compare that situation with the “Art Class” situation, where one may need to give instructions to cease doing something (“stop doodling”/“turn it down”)…..

And what tickles me about the names of some of the store brand/generic brand items, is that they are supposed to sound so close to the “name brand”, so that you’re supposed to say “it’s just as good as the name brand!”.. which, many times, is (or can be) just as good! – One example is “Spaghetti-Os”. It may have a little “cartoon mascot” of an “O”. the generic/store/off brand may be called “Spaghetti Loops”, and will/may have a similar looking design, and the “mascot” on the can may be almost close, as well. Or if it’s cereal, it may be “Frosted Flakes” with “Tony the Tiger™”. The other brand may be “Snowy Flakes”, with a Polar Bear in a parka…
