Les: "Just askin' a girl to the prom. That a crime?"
Gunther: "When it's MY girl, YES!!"
Les: "So you already asked her, huh?"
Les: "Guess not"
Gunther: "IT'S 2 MONTHS AWAY!!"
January 17, 2018
“♪…Well… I guess he’d say… it was only 2 months away!…♪” – Is this another case of Gunther doing “the Safety Dance”?… – Is Rosa anxious to say: “I told you so!” when it comes to taking the initiative?… – Did Les actually have a point?… – Does anybody have change for a $5?…..
Oh, Gunther…are you ever in trouble now! ;)
Rosa looks like she’s about to have Leslie’s head on a platter…and Gunther needs to Man Up… ;)
“Les’ Side Story”“A Deterred Gent ( A Fab Wreck Softens Her)”“Custard’s Frozen Stand”“The Early Worm Catches the Love Birds”or “♪….It Takes Two Months, Baby! It Takes Two…♪”
Turn on your heel and ask her, Gunth.
Gunther! Didn’t momma ever tell you that when you snooze YOU LOSE!
“Always be proactive, not reactive…” And it does well for you, Gunther, to remember it takes TIME for a young woman to prepare for a prom!!! Especially when it comes to picking out a dress…and a date…for the SENIOR prom… ;)
Hard to believe….it actually looks like Les is doing Gunther a favour!
I agree with Gunther. It’s a whole two months away.
“Brought to you” by…Plotz’ soup.. “Thick, heavy and full ofsurprises!… For a limited time, find 24 Carrot rings inside, and cash them in for a giant, sweet Date!”… – Time detergent…. “Yeah, you’ll hurry up and do your laundry, now!…” – and by…Lolly and Pop’s Candy Shop… “Buy one can of Plotz’ soup, get a box of Amminal Crackers for free!”…
Les makes sense, Gunth. What’s your plan?
At least Gunther called Rosa “MY girl…” which is a step in the right direction for him… ;)
I really don’t have a problem with anything Les has done. If Gunther still struggles with asking Rosa out at this point, he doesn’t deserve her.
Ah, well…the witching hour doth approach…and my Irish, Katie, is giving me that When Are You Going To Put Me To Bed! look… ;)
For God’s sake Gunther – Learn to lie! If Gunther said, “Yes, I asked her to the Prom,” of course Rosa would have backed him. Gunth, whaddya gonna do when you’re married and your wife asks you, “Is my $@! too big?”… BTW, Greg – No real world stories – like both Rosa & Crystal wind up going for Les… Comics are much better than the real world…
That scared look again. . . Nothing ventured, nothing gained, Gunther. Act now or helplessly watch Rosa go off with Les or some other guy—and you’ll have no right to complain.
Am I the only one who thinks Leslie is going to turn out to be a pretty decent character, but just has never been taught how to behave before? Maybe being raised by an abusive, alcoholic father or something.
And on top of that, the whole tux rental and gown arrangements, any transportation that needs to be reserved and school prom committee decorations, etc… it really does need this far in advance, sometimes!…
A $5 dollar coin would be called a Bluennie!
Lame, Gunther, lame! How long were you planning to wait?
A fiver is sometimes called a ‘fin’.
Here we go…
“I hate to ask her this early because I may find somebody better by then.”
Gunther? “I ASKED Her FIRST” Hasn’t Been in EFFECT Since the Good Old Days When Guys used to Club Gals over Their Heads to Ask them to the Prom!
But let’s MAKE This Real Simple: Rosa – “Leslie? HELL, NO! Gunther? YES!!!”
Waitress? COFFEE, for My WORK Is DONE!!! …..For Today…..,
For someone who plans everything out, Gunther sure didn’t plan this one out.
howtheduck,Humans are possessive. It’s not a matter of sexism since both genders are rhat way.my guymy girlmy seatmy countrymy schoolmy partymy churchmy moneyIt would be silly to pretend otherwise.
and your avatar is very pretty
Amazing that Leslie is calm, logical and mature. Rosa goes from "I’m listening " in the first panel to “Yeah, Gunther” in the second panel, to Maybe Les isn’t so bad and Gunther is hopeless in the third panel. Or maybe she will say yes to Les to teach Gunther a lesson.
Can’t believe one moment she is enthralled with manly Gunther who stands up for her and now she is ……..
Imagine that. Les giving Gunth impetus to hit on Rosa and finally ask her out…. amazing!
I have to say, Rosa’s look in the 2nd & 3rd panels is PRICELESS! :-)
Well, seems old Leslie Knox does have useful part to play. Time to motivate the milquetoast! Wake up or break up, Gunther!
(Of course, I can’t see that there is any way Rosa would have anything to do with that Knox creep. But she might use him very successfully as a puppet.)
Dave53,Just so you’re not green with envy. There is another David Green on NPR, but I’m not jealous of him using my name. (Not that he won’t also become a George, come the revolution and my usurpation of power.)
Les is talking with hands safely in pockets. He doesn’t give a crap about Gunther and he knows what Rosa wants.
Wanna bet she says yes to Les??
And Bond said to Moneypenny, “I am to eliminate all free radicals.”.To which she responded, “Oh, DO be careful, James.”.Maybe he can eliminate the bills, too.
So, in a fit of pique, Rosa accepts LK’s invitation, leaving the G-man hoist on his own pitard.
Don’t look at us for sympathy, Gunther (panel 3). Rosa now expects you to do the Right Thing, at once. You do know what the Right Thing is, don’t you?Or else, Les wins.
It IS hard to be spontaneous AND plan ahead, too.
-today’s teenage girl will expect her boyfriend to ask her to the prom -I guarantee you that yesterday’s teenage girl expects to be asked to a prom, too. The idea that when teens are dating, it’s implied that they will go to a prom is like saying that when two twentysomethings have been dating, there doesn’t have to be a marriage proposal because it’s ‘implied’.
Sheesh!!! Imagine how happy parents would be about spending an arm and a leg on a prom dress, and the day of the prom, the ‘date’ doesn’t show up….
If Rosa accepts Leslie’s offer, they deserve each other. Girls talk about proms months ahead with their boyfriends, so I don’t think Rosa cares if she and Gunther are still together in two months from now.
howthe,I’ve heard it.It is silly in context, but I’ve heard it.Just as when someone says, “My country,” they are not claiming ownership but being part of, linked inextricably to that country. Those who equate it with “my dog” or “my slave” are usually just being silly..Admittedly, some can’t make the distinction but Gunther has never acted as if he is one of them.(Rosa shows some tendencies along those lines with how she took control over Gunther, but I shall give her the benefit of the doubt.)
LevThis fighting over a name is a mataphor for fighting over Rosa, right??
joel,Because you had “an understanding” and understood your social set-up.Rosa and Gunther don’t fully understand each other yet..Misunderstandings make much misery
Prom-posals are like marriage proposals…. In my day, (1950,s) just dating would call for an invitation well in advance. If you were “going steady” all dances were presumed a done deal. Asking someone’s steady out was never never done.
Ah, “Prom”.Where you hang out with the same people you’ve hung out with all year long, just in more expensive clothes.
Yeah, would be nice seeing silver pieces, and a few of those liberty coins, and not just the pictures in the book…. – It’d be nice too if one had a steel penny (just for the sake of interest), or to run across an actual 19th century “half-dime”!…
Do either one of these guys even know her name? They both treat her like she is an inanimate object, like a possession. Rosa could do so much better than these males.
Gunther needs to take her to the make out point .
Gunther isn’t necessarily taking any steps backward, at this point… it could be that he’s made small strides forward, as Rosa was proud to relate to Crystal and Knute…. (remember his reaction when Les “Knox” the books out of her hand?) it could be just a natural “testing of his metal”, or the “forced” testing possibly, at Les’ hands…. Les’ proposition is just making Gunther seem foolish at the moment… but again, remember that as of Monday’s strip, all seemed to be looking a “bit” forward in the progress department…
Rosa is going to say yes to Leslie.
Or “testing of his mettle”, if you will, as well….
Plus, I was trying to fit in something “in memoriam” to Ms. Temple, and it all seemed to tie in, with a plot thickening here, and her beloved numbers/movies “Animal Crackers” and “Good Ship…”
If it’s getting to be like counterfeit money, you can always do something that’s your own personal touch, an “unseen” seal of your approval, if you will….
Ask Rose right now, Gunther, so that Les will back down…hopefully.
That’s actually part of how I came to use my name..
Even older robot:
One I had as a kid:
Way behind the 8-ball, Gunth. I know girls who ordered their prom dresses last month already.
I haven’t seen a US$2 bill for some time. As it have a picture of Thomas Jefferson on it, I guess, under the Canadian rule, it would be called a “Jeffie”.
Ah, yes. Fireball XL5’s Robert the Robot.
Two months away?! Gunther, that’s usually when most guys ask their girls to prom and that’s around the time girls start getting ready for it!
Okay I was afraid of that, the covalent electrons are loose again.Iam, you can see ’twas intended for howtheduck, so signing off on my cantankerous Nook for today, might try a hard shut-down or just go back to my normal quiet self
nermal, but he wasn’t claiming youSo all is well
-Apparently you’ve paid as much attention to the words that Rosa has used to explain her concerns about Gunther as you’ve paid to my words.-Rosa has been the one taking all the initiative in asking Gunther out. She has no reason to assume that she has a prom date with Gunther, unless she’s invited him. She hasn’t said that she’s invited him. -So who, exactly, is going to DISCUSS what? If Les hadn’t asked Rosa to the prom and she wanted to go (given Gunther’s past lack of initiative), Rosa would have had to invite him. -And why the diatribe on whether people can afford to mortgage a home for a limo or a dress; that was not my point at all….-Sigh. Oh,well, it’s as absurd for me to try to carry on a conversation with you as it is for me to believe that I’ll buy a winning lottery ticket. Thanks for letting me know what a poor use of my time it is to read your comments or try to talk to you….
In Memoriam, Sid Caesar, who just passed away…
Oh Gunther, Gunther. I wonder if Rosa has been taught to graciously accept the first invitation she receives?
Is it me, or does Leslie look a lot like Beavis?
Get with it Gunther.
Well, “Ashburton”, “Eagle”, "Looks like we’ll hafta “hunker down” again… I guess you’re next, “JPW”… snow and ice in one, this time…
Gutner’s version of Dirk?.. Hmm…something to think about… could be… – If we dissect it even further, Miguel, Derek and Stuart also had their exits, though not as “dignified” as Dirk was allowed. But all the same, they each did have their exit, eventually… maybe he could be Gunther’s version of Dirk….
I like Log Cabin… I think Mrs. Butterworth and Aunt Jemima are the ones that sit on my table the most, though….
I did.. I did, indeed!..
And that’s the bottom line !…
Well, reform is nice, Da(u)e, if Les will reform, but we just don’t know, yet… Greg has said this is based on someone he knew….Every story has to have someone to be the “opposition”/fictional opponent…. – Rehabilitation in society is the ultimate hope, but we’ll just have to wait and see what’s up with this week…
Time’s awastin’ Gunther!
Gunther, while you’re at it, also propose marriage to Rosa and get that one covered.
Sid Caesar died! If someone had asked me a half-hour ago if Sid Caesar was still alive, I would probably have said; “nah, he’s been dead for years.”
Dave53My brother-in-law is Roy Eugene ChanceryYou can guess which cowboys provided their names
howtheduck,“Man up” thereby establishing society’s expectations of what a REAL MAN is like. Those who don’t meet the standard often overcompensate and/or commit suicide..It’s a small price to pay to keep people in line, as long as someone ELSE pays the price.
howtheduck,Not that odd, Rosa didn’t grow up through the women’s liberation movement, so much older social expectations may be her strongest standard, whereas some here fight the war of the sexes at a hanky drop..Some are opposed to the expression “my girl” while others (?) proudly call themselves “taken” , thereby subject to being misunderstood as PROPERTY..WHAT A WORLD
“When you get right down to it, would there even be a Rosa/Gunther relationship without Leslie Knox?”I think they already Had a relationship (of sorts) before this mess. At any rate, I think that their relationship is on its way to becoming more solid than it already is… ;)
“..notice how the imposter’s English isn’t quite right?”I was highly annoyed that someone could steal your identity like that! I know I’d be Furious if someone commandeered my Mouse! Oh, BTW,I stopped reading his/her/its postings, so I am not aware of the nuances of what is going on. Hope gocomics settles this in your favor… ;)
A lot of women identity as Subs. Fetlife is lousy with them.
There is a subgroup of fetishists who crave the 1950’s Household, where father knows best.
alanada, even if a woman says she just wants to be Mrs John Smith, that does not she necessarily wants a subservient role. It all depends on what she thinks and intends that role to entail. Many intend to manipulate their husbands like puppets. Others come to it when they realize their husbands do not have the driving ambition they took for granted.
