Washington State passed a law, “1% for art,” meaning that 1% of the construction cost for any public building had to be dedicated to art.
So the $750,000 Tacoma Dome had a 75,000 piece of art. Rather than commission something reflective of the Pacific Northwest, they decided on an abstract, ugly, neon set of squiggles.
People booed, every time it was turned on, so the owners would turn it on at the last note of the National Anthem. Even the “libs” in Washington State wouldn’t boo then.
