If you actually watch the movie, note when he’s sitting talking to the girl, and he gets uncomfortable and then stands up, you’ll see he was sitting on a bush.
“The War of the Colossal Beast” was an actual movie that was released in 1958, according to Wikipedia. It was also known as ""Revenge of the Colossal Man," and was a sequel to 1957’s “The Amazing Colossal Man”. TWotCB was shown as the second half of a double feature, the first half being “Attack of the Puppet People”.
The movie was produced by Samuel Z. Arkoff and James H. Nicholson for American International (yes, the same studio that produced all of those Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello “beach movies” that we all loved).

I think he just threw away his movie money into the wishing well. Probably wishing the movie would be great.
