Shouldn’t it be more like “they call[ed] me Mr. Tibbs”? RIP, Sid.

Almost no one mentions it, but I was always impressed that he was the Bahamian ambassador to Japan for a number of years, and then their ambassador to UNESCO. He always seemed to me the absolutely perfect type of person to be an ambassador. So much class and dignity. An amazing person.

Meanwhile, up just beyond the Pearly Gates, Saint Peter’s asking “Guess who’s coming to dinner?”

I always wondered why the script didn’t read “They call me Detective Tibbs.” Detective is a higher rank than Mister. I rewatched that film after Poitier’s passing, and it has not only withstood the test of time, it reminded me of the strides we’ve made since 1967, but it also reminded me of far we’ve slid back during the trump years.

If ‘Da Vinci Code’ featured a Virgil Tibbs instead of a Robert Langdon, would he have paired up with a partner named Dante something-or-other?
