Gee, if we demoted Arizona from a state to a territory, we could demand that Arizonans show a valid passport before entering any bordering U.S. state…

It doesn’t work that way ltcf. An incorporated territory is part of the US and its residents are citizens. Having been born in Arizona before its statehood didn’t disqualify Barry Goldwater from running in 1964.
