Require them to pass emotional stability tests along with regular coursework — that they must pass — on things about various stuff that cops oughta know. Heck I had to pass a stupid online course on non-harassment every year when I worked at each of several companies. HR required it. Make it real, and make sure that cops who have trouble with the real one have ways to overcome their handicap. Or else.

We absolutely cannot have accountability for police.

For one thing, it’s hard. So hard that it cannot be done. Right?

    .

But more important, all police forces need some ‘bad apples’ so they have some justification for all police behavior, especially when people die in custody.

    .

And no one believes any of that stuff about personal responsibility anyway, right?

    Let’s go investigate Hunter’s laptop.

There is a bit of dilemma here. Policing is a tough job, criminals can be violent, police have to trust each other and know their buddies have their backs. But none of that should be an excuse for the behaviour we see every week (from the UK news, I am sure it is daily for people in the US) of police shootings and beatings.

One issue no one has mentioned is how many police forces the USA has, something like 16000, I believe. A real case there for consistent state wide training to ensure standards of behaviour, selection and discipline. With federal oversight.

The idea of " good cops" is pretty much a fiction: they may not be the perpetrators of scandalous behaviour – but they all know who are, and remain silent. As the saying goes: silence = death! The “good cops” are really just as much a part of the problem because of their willingness to look the other way, to lie on the stand to protect their “buddies”, and to not bring thier collective force to bear to make the truly bad ones stop!

In today’s police force, all a proud-boy with a 9th grade education and afraid of his own shadow and anger issues and a loner personality needs to be a cop is to just walk in the front door of a police station and say “gimme a gun and a badge, I’m ready to play policeman!”.

The Militarization of the police is certainly one of the worst problems facing our Nation! The job skills needed for a soldier and those for a police officer are not even close to being similar.

You know what you can ask a cop pretty well all over the civilized world? “So, what university did you get your degree from?”

Often people who carry guns see guns as the solution to everything. That is one reason why there are so many killings by cops.

IF you examine WHY anyone would enter the field of “law enforcement”, you’d find a surprisingly large number of people doing it because they believe THEY know better than YOU exactly HOW to live YOUR life – in other words, it is a secular form of “religious” belief!

And when they detect a deviance from what they “believe” your actions should be, they react as one would if you’d questioned their religious beliefs.

Their reaction can be mild or harsh, depending on how “threatened” they feel about YOU IN GENERAL.

The fake thin line that blatantly divides a community from its so called protectors. A bad cop is an expensive liability. Once we see police with violent tendencies or history immediately removed from the force, trust will start to return.
