A&Andy, to refuse the prize, after it had been announced, would have been an untactful rebuke of the Nobel Committee. If they had let Pres. Obama know in advance – privately – that he was under consideration, I suspect that he would indeed have refused it.
church’, I don’t have specifics, but I do remember the Secret Service being extremely nervous about Obama being in large crowds, because they had reason to think the threat level was high, so to speak. I presume they had plenty of death threats. Including Glenn Beck, right? Bush rarely went out in public, and never did a public meeting with unscreened people, so make of that what you will. I think it says more about him than his threat level, myself.
One of the nastier jokes that has been floating around is that Democratic politicians are always at greater risk, at least this century, because right-wing loonies, being NRA fans, are better shots! Reagan and Ford dodged bullets, Kennedy didn’t.
Another pattern we might observe is that those in favor of rights for African-Americans tend to get killed: Lincoln, Garfield (old-school Republican), Kennedy (slow, but he was getting there)…

Either the economy becomes like the walking dead, or you drive a stake through the heart of the bloodsuckers.” He was comparing the Obama Administration to vampires, and showed a picture of Obama with fangs. Beck’s an evil little clown with nothing on his mind but ratings (and whaddya know - Rush admitted the same about himself!), but if Beck gets death threats, he’s probably delighted to know he is getting attention. I am, shall we say, skeptical that he gets anything like the serious death threats Obama gets.
