In our house, for kid tussles, adults escalate like this:

1: Adult admonishes “share nicely” and observes from a small distance.

2: “OK, that didn’t work. Shall we use a timer to say when to trade?” (Note: one probable outcome: The toy is abandoned by both)

3: “OK, that didn’t work, I’ll take the toy now, and set a timer for a whole half hour.”

4: “Hmm. Okay, time out for both of you. Betty-Joe: You’ll take timeout in my bedroom. Sammy-Mae, You’ll take timeout watching me finish my chores.”

5: Kiddycide. Note that we’ve never yet made it all the way to step 5 (thank goodness) :)
