Bison bison is roughly 2-3 times as efficient as cows at converting grass to protein. Unfortunately, they’re also about 30 – 40 times as efficient at turning fences into splinters.
We’d still be better off in the west with fewer cows, feral horses, feral burros, and sheep in restoring native grasses and better rangelands, with more bison. Also interesting that ranchers blame ATVs and hunters for noxious weeds, when domestic livestock are responsible for 99% of noxious weeds, and diseases like blue tongue and brucellosis, that are now being blamed on wildlife they spread disease to!
