Well, looks like four people are sane enough to tell the difference between a windmill and a wind chime. Of course, this could be something the hidden patriots in the Republican caucus cobbled together and we’re in for a helluva surprise when they remove him. But, don’t see that in the cards. Regardless of the case, four is probably all the integrity they have in the caucus…and who knows, if that will last.
I think what we have here is a variation of what happened to the faithful horse in Orwell’s “Animal Farm”. Oh, and by the way, Jeff, not many American have even a clue as to what “knackers” refers to. But that was the sign on the truck hauling the horse off in the cartoon version of “Animal Farm”, so maybe some will get it.
Teddy Roosevelt was the very antithesis of the present day GOP — as his support of the “Square Deal” for the benefit of the average American at the expense of the entrenched greedy rich bastards, the railroad robber barons, and unregulated corporate trusts proves. TR ditched the GOP. As its founder, he ran for President in 1912 under the populist aegis of the Bull Moose Party, and lost to Wilson.

It does not mean to stand by the president or any other public official, save exactly to the degree in which he himself stands by the country. It is patriotic to support him insofar as he efficiently serves the country. It is unpatriotic not to oppose him to the exact extent that by inefficiency or otherwise he fails in his duty to stand by the country. In either event, it is unpatriotic not to tell the truth, whether about the president or anyone else.”“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.” Theodore Roosevelt.
Or, as another Republican once put it…“The American workingman must live in a house, not a hut; he must wear decent clothes and eat wholesome and nourishing food. He is an integral part of the municipality, the State, and the Nation; subject to no fetters of class or caste; neither pauper, nor peasant, nor serf, but a free American citizen. He has the ballot, and if it were possible it would be dangerous to degrade him. The country stands pledged to give him education, political power, and a higher form of life than foreign nations accord their laborers, and he must be sustained by higher rates of wages than those of Europe. Our industries operated by American citizens must be freed from foreign interference and organized into a distinct American system, which will exact some temporary sacrifices but result in general prosperity and true national independence. In maintaining diversified industries we utilize every talent, provide a field for every capacity, and bind together the whole people in mutual dependence and support, assuring the strength and security of our Republic.” Senator Daniel J. Morrell.
The Republican Party began in the 1854 as the Liberal party in the U.S. Lincoln, a Liberal, was their first elected president. Teddy Roosevelt was a Liberal. Eisenhower was accused by conservatives of being a socialist/communist. The Republican Party had a Liberal wing well into the 1960s, and last led by Thomas Dewey. It was Nixon’s ‘Southern Strategy’ in 1968 that converted conservatives in the South to the GOP. Imagine the South supporting ‘the party of Lincoln’. The joke was on them. If Lincoln were president today Republican/conservatives would impeach him.
Anyway, Baa Baa makes a good spirit animal and more accurate totem for the new GOP, as in Phillip Pullman’s streaming “His dark materials”. Except they would also be a carnivorous flock that attacks on command with no long term memory.
Of course the GOP has very few BLACK sheep……..By the way, if Ben Carson woke up more than a couple times a year, you think he would realize that Trump is a lifelong racist? (He wouldn’t CARE, natch, but he might just realize it………)
