I’m reminded of a movie decades ago, where an advertising exec was committed for wanting to use the truth in advertising. He and some fellow patients eventually escaped and started their own business. They did an ad for Sony stating that Japanese are short, enabling them to work on electronics without having to bend their backs like Americans do.
“Buy Sony. Because Americans are just too damn tall.”
I guess this explains animes like “The Law of Ueki”, certain foreigner characters despite being in Middle School look like grown men, I actually like those caricatures, plus the size difference made the stakes seem higher.
I guess for Sam to fit in he’ll have to find a tribe a tribe of Onis, according to legends they’re 6ft tall or more, I don’t know if Japanese people are really all that small, but if they are, strange to think they’re the demon slayers!
Japanese trains were fun and fast. Yes, there are crowds, but it was not overwhelming, I guess because they are nice people. In Korea, the buses were also crowded but the smell of garlic or Kimshi could be overwhelming.
I can relate to Sam. I was assigned to a small communications site outside of Fukuoka, Japan. I stand 6’2" and was forever smacking my forehead on the top of the doorframe of my apartment.I went to see Boston in concert with an ex-pat, Bill Coronet, who also worked as a DJ there. Bill was a lot taller than I was, easily 6’6", possibly more. He and I stood at the back of the venue, enjoying the show. The Japanese were nice polite, applauded after the songs but stayed seated in their seats. Until the end of the main set that is, then they stood up, however, even when they stood up Bill and I still had an unobstructed view of the stage.

From what I’ve heard about the subways in Japan, she’s been groped within an inch of her life.
