Must have been drawn prior to Scalia’s demise.

This toon reads correctly: US Constitution beware of Scalia. He was known as an associate justice and a staunch “originalist.” To understand the Constitution as an originalist did not mean reading it strictly, or narrowly, or as a Republican — it meant recognizing that the Constitution was written by 18th century men in a particular time, context, and with a particular meaning. As an example, Scalia noted that if it were not cruel and unusual in the 1790s to sentence a convicted murder to the death penalty, then the Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment in the Eighth Amendment should not be read as banning the death penalty. That, for Scalia, was an easy question for an originalist to answer. But Scalia did read the Constitution as a Republican and betrayed his Constitution. The appointment of justices to the Supreme Court have become politicized to the point the court itself has come to be seen as a political instrument. We need to get back to judges who are not swayed by party ties.

Evidently for Scalia, the Constitution intended that Supreme Court justices appear as featured speakers at Republican fund raisers. (Alito, too)

The Constitution also intended that SC justices accept gifts from people with business before the Court.

With due respect for his lengthy service, there were decisisions where he wasn’t a guard dog, but the stray leaving “presents” on our collective yards. HIs definition of “originalist” got strange at times.

Wish that were true. Constitution is a bit like the Bible. Much of the good or bad comes from the interpreter.

The Supreme Courts lost it’s best, most intelligent justice. He understood the Constitution & the limits it places on our government better then any justice on the court today. The whole country will be worse off without his wisdom.
