The reverence with which she receives the tongs in P2 is pretty cute.

I was driving home about 20 years ago, and saw someone had started their propane grill on their front porch. It set fire to the roof extending over the porch, and was working on moving up the front of the house. No idea where the cook was… But the fire department came pretty quick.

This isn’t barbecue. This is grilling. I’ve nothing against grilling. Some of my best friends grill (but I wouldn’t want my daughter to marry one). But let’s call it by it’s real name… I’m a bit shocked by this submission to an urban myth propagated in the 1950s when suburban dwellers wanted to make their backyard grilling sound more prestigious than “burning a hot dog” and started calling grilling barbecue.

Charcoal, started with a chimney, no “quick light” or lighter fluid!

I thought it was a beard in uncle Roger’s face, but now I know it’s charcoal. You go, uncle Roger!

You might change your mind, Charlotte, in coming years where you’ll be expected to do all the work at the family cookouts. If you’re lucky you might get some leftover food after everybody else has been served and has eaten.
