Oh, you gotta be kidding me, Varvel. Just because there’s a lack of public reaction doesn’t mean that something isn’t happening out of the public eye.

    I agree, so what.

Unlike Varvel I have faith in the US military’s ability to respond to any threat that China, or any other nation or terrorist organization, can come up with.

Hypersonic missiles? Yes. I think we can counter that threat.

    Varvel aggressively forgets (on purpose) how much Trump loved nuclear weapons;

“Why do we even have nukes if we’re no going to use them”

And then there was the time he wanted to use a nuclear bomb to “stop” a hurricane.

PLUS, at a recent private republican gathering Trump told them how much he admired Putin and Xi. These are things which Varvel would never draw a cartoon about.

This doesn’t seem like you being afraid Gary. It seems more like you saying “I can make a quick buck off the rubes that follow me. I know this isn’t a real threat”.

And if I can see that you’re doing that- so can a lot of other people. 81 million.

It’s interesting to me that this is occurring during the 59th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis? Can you even imagine if a REAL crisis like that one occurred now, “out” in the public/social media? All of the “experts” with their homegrown knowledge on everything “analyzing” events? JFK certainly faced criticism then but he kept it quiet for over a week before his famous speech announcing the crisis to the world. And, the real deal that ended it was kept quiet for decades.

As though China would do something like this in the expectation of improving its economy and the world’s opinion of it! They would be much more likely to target Taiwan than Washington, D.C. — because our counterattack would obliterate them.

Do people really think that China has a lower IQ than we do, What good would bombing us do, the cost outweigh the gain.

Lying like a cheap rug, as usual, I see, Varvel.

Where’s your proof that Biden isn’t concerned about that?

Scientific American reported that hypersonic missiles have grave problems unlikely to be fixed because of the basic laws of physics. The right wing is almost always scientifically ignorant.

Remember last year when Russia was reported to have tested a hypersonic missile? The U.S. identified and tracked it. They’ve since dropped the program. If we can see it, we can kill it. The ‘how’ is all classified.

Well, the FrightWingers are in full foaming froth-mouth form.

The primary concern about new Chinese weapons is how they might effect our naval operations.

We have satellites that can detect missile launches. That includes the launch vehicle for such hyper-hyped missiles. And after separation, the hypersonic part will have a nice infrared signature even without a propulsion system running (it is supposed to be a hypersonic glider — but no real indication of the glide range). With warning time, even Carriers can be someplace unexpected at launch time.

We have Aegis missile ships. The Aegis has a pretty good track record at shooting down missiles (better than our so-called ABM system). And those missiles are traveling at beyond “hypersonic” speeds.

Wanna mess up a fast glider’s trajectory? Even a near miss of an explosive warhead could disturb the airflow over the glider, possibly causing loss of control.

And this would be an incentive for laser weapon development (the one tested by the Navy almost certainly doesn’t have sufficient power).

In any case, expect defense contractors to be salivating at the “need” for new defenses.

The most significant point about the Chinese weapon is the ability to do a partial orbit in order to attack by an indirect route. That will require additional tracking capabilities, distributed more widely on land and sea. But those are cheap compared to an aircraft carrier and its aircraft.

How are hypersonic missiles more deadly than ballistic missiles? There really isn’t a defense against either one. The only deterrence is “mutually assured destruction”, or MAD.

This is a nonsense cartoon and Varvel is an idiot.

The glaring error in this toon is the depiction of Joe playing tic-tac-toe — it puts forth a false implication that Joe has the cognitive focus and attention to do so.

I sure feel safe with General Milley and Biden at the helm of the ship of state….rudderless as it may be under this administration and the entrenched liberal bureaucracy.
