My total break with the GOP took almost two decades. It began when the evangelical right took over the soul of the party in the ’80s. But I still largely voted GOP because they said they were the party of fiscal responsibility – and then spent like drunken sailors when they finally got Congress in the ’90s. It ended when the GOP impeached Clinton for lying about getting a hummer (not exactly the “high crime” the founders were thinking of).
