Heavens, we had a full-size Boxer who thought he was a lapdog. He’d take a running start, leap into the air and hit your lap, taking you and the chair over backward. He started it when he was a puppy of about three pounds and never outgrew it.
My godchildren’s grandparents used to have two slightly oversize German shepherds, male and female. For whatever reason, the female adored me… there is nothing like having a full-size German shepherd jumping in your lap and licking your face. Nothing. My usual response was “I love you too, Tanya – now please get down…”
I had a Great Dane that thought he was a lap dog. He would usually start with just his head, about the size of a lap dog, then try to climb on.I’d usually slide down to the floor with my back against the chair and let him have my lap with the floor as support.

That’s the joke. The dog thinks he’s small enough and cute enough to fit into someone’s lap — which is what a lap dog is.
