No school tomorrow. Many schools where I live (suburban Philadelphia) are used as polling places.

It’s another (easier?) way of saying there’s an exception: It’s the first Tuesday of November unless the first Tuesday is on the first day of the month (November 1st), then it’s on the second Tuesday (November 8th).

The first of the month used to be payday. Don’t want people to have to make a choice between voting and getting their monthly pay (and paying their bills).

Actually, there’s some setup & training required to be “up & running” in the early hours on Election Day. If the first Tuesday was on the 1st, that work would be done in October. Now we would need to pay people in two different months. That a pittance divided into two paychecks. More expense for the county and more reasons to avoid being a poll worker.

Poll workers are getting to look younger recently; is it just me?

Had to put it off this year so it could be held under a full moon.

There have been enough problems with graveyard votes without doing it on the day of the dead.

In early America, courts met the first Monday of the month. Famers would also come to local courthouses on that day to sell their wares since some many people from out of the area was in town for business. Since voting was coducted in the courthouse, it made sense to have everyone vote the next day when most people were still in town.

I’ve always wondered about this myself. Surprisingly, there actually was a logical reason for designating voting day based on the electoral college. This is a good explanation:

Where I live Election Day is a school day as usual.

We would have PE outside on Election Day, as our school was a polling place & the voting booths were set up in the gym.

Election Day should be the day after Tax Day.
