FAR too many people learn the WRONG THINGS from their mistakes. Things like “no matter how bad I screw up, someone will fix it” and the like. Some folks, though, do manage to learn useful things, like “if you want it done right, hire an expert” and “the best way to ‘done’ is through ‘doing’ ”.

The hurtful mistakes one makes early on often are the source of restless nights in later years. Scrooge is just the poster boy for regrets for what might have been.

Another fictional character, Inspector Ian Rutledge, is described by author Charles Todd as being beset by the spirit of a dead man from his past. The ghost, named Hamish, rides him mercilessly about the event that lead to his death. A constant reminder. Seems we all have a Hamish: our ever present pasts. Else why insomnia?

I always told my kids, don’t make any mistakes you can’t outlive. As for me, I’m willing to make mistakes if you’re willing to learn from them.

“Any idiot, upon seeing the 1st automobile, could easily predict that it would revolutionize transportation. Only someone with exceptionally keen insight could have foreseen that it would also revolutionize the sex lives of teenagers.” —Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), American science-fiction writer

That which does not kill you, makes you stronger.

Unfortunately, that’s not true for a lot of people either.
