The USA could have switched to the metric system in the 19th century. But apparently, no American can fathom how it works. How could the rest of the world be so insular?

The metric system is used very much in the U.S. by the sciences and mechanics and many others. It is just not used for “public” things such as road signs (most) sports lengths etc and various food and other labels.

“He was out by kilometer!” just doesn’t have that ring to it.

Besides, isn’t in football where if it’s fourth down and long, you drop back ten yards and … pint?

Living in Canada during metrication, I had fun with the resistance to it. I pointed out that US and Imperial measurements were side by side in grocery packaging and it might be a first step to get something between a US and Imperial quart. Everyone agreed. Then, I claimed, you could call it a litre. Everyone sputtered.
