    My first and second first semester calculus professors were like that. They couldn’t get that the students were new at it and needed more than just a bunch of equations thrown at them. Third time was a PhD TA. He knew his stuff, and He Understood That We Didn’t. He really took the time to explain why and how it worked. When we would suggest a way to solve a problem, even if it wasn’t going to work (he would tell us up front), he would go along the path we chose, and explain where the problem in our logic was. We all did really well in that class, because he taught it at our level.
