So what lies at the end of this tunnel?

Somehow I get the impression that those miners were sent down for show. First, do recall that one of the other miners remarked earlier that though there were grand plans for the excavation, he didn’t think that the project would ever bear fruit. Second, the last panel in today’s strip implies that there is something (or someone) down in that shaft that the colonists aren’t being allowed to see and even must remain hidden.

The end of the tunnel is how far the dittos dig and restructure as they go. Now the green monkey will hit the fan. Unknown tech in use? He really didn’t think this through since he told no one in charge.

This does not bode well for our protagonist and his family. For those that missed Monday’s post by me about a video game that is a little too close to Endtown in scope. it is called “Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden” it’s on Steam. and no I don’t play it nor am I recommending it, though some of our younger readers may enjoy it.I was surprised to see something so close to my favorite comic

There’s a problem with doing five or six months of work in an afternoon.

    It involves layoffs.

Wally is upsetting the Status Quo. Not something the powers that be will be pleased with. They’d been promising improvements and enlargement of the community for years (I suspect we will find) and now, in a day, they’re happening and the folks there will want even more.

oh look. A colony being kept happy and ignorant with boring as hell work that either doesn’t go anywhere, or gets changed the last second. Whaaaaat a surprise.

Wally is disrupting the social order of things. Keep the workers busy or they get into mischief.

Chic hates school. Wally is going to be crushed for efficiency. Kirbee seen green reminding her of Sara and Jim’s tales of the Great Green. They all be leaving soon.

I want to know more about the “Sir” that he’s talking to. Either he’s afraid of Wally’s popularity, or he knows something about the territory he’s excavating, or he’s just a plain old reactionary afraid of new technology.

Wally is consistent. In Endtown, in Unity, and here…he has no time for bullies or for arbitrary rules designed to hold people down.

Wally loves engineered solutions but also has a lack of political awareness (what did he think think was going to happen when he revealed a ditto-can of easy-digging?), much like Chic.Flick’s phone conversation is laced with interesting comments. What does he mean that its a “Super-strong internal lattice work”? Are dittos supporting the tunnel? Why aren’t Flick and his respondent more interested in grabbing the dittos rather than stopping them? Flick is giving information on both the tunnel distance and the worker’s response; which is the critical concern?

I am betting that either a) the colony has dug too many tunnels and are constantly switching to avoid collapse. b) they have some deal with top sider hiding deep below for safety.
