University Education was free in my day, but so were 60% marginal tax rates. It was a fair trade for those who made money from their learnings.And beneficial to society for those who applied their skills in lower paying jobs that met areas of need.

Tax rates are lower now, and there are subsidised fees for university training. But repayments are tied to income and the debt is only indexed to inflation.
