So the advice this guy is going to give Mike and Kim is to do nothing.

I used to date a seismologist. It was a pretty shaky relationship. It was tough because she knew about all my faults.

Some prognosticators use seismographs, some use Ouija Boards or Magic 8-Balls … Lars uses computer-based Solitaire.

And seismologists don’t predict earthquakes. They want to, but there’s a lot going on that’s too murky to calculate, fuzzing up the calculations.

Only in the movies, Kim, do seismologists predict earthquakes. If Lars is so good a predicting failures, why didn’t he predict Mike’s negative view of his work?

it’s not as bad as it sounds. there are people with a talent for picking out failures. advertisers love them when they can identify them it’s sort of “He liked that? oh crap it’s gonna fail”

Apparently, Mike has to produce something before Capt. Hairline can tell him it’s going to fail and earn his paycheck. Wait, he was her “boy” friend?!

Well, if you can stop yourself from doing anything that fails, you kind of set yourself up for success. Or at least mediocrity.

Video on demand (streaming) and handwriting (and several other forms of) recognition are now commonplace, but seismologists still can’t predict earthquakes reliably.

“Failure of video on demand”. Do we really have to get these old and out of date comics. Can we please get some fresh blood? Doonesbury gets his new stuff out on Sunday, let’s give the spot to someone else for weekdays.

When I was in college, we geology majors had an intramural mixed volleyball team, whose name was (and I am not making this up): Are You Cummingtonite, or the Plutonic Affair. We did OK, but did not win the tournament.

Yes, Kim, that’s what a seismologist does. I’m sure there’s more to it but that’s the main thing. What’s Lars gonna predict, the failure of online Solitaire?

Pity he could only see 3 years in the future, instead of 30 (where Video-On-Demand and Handwriting Recognition are well-established and lucrative).
