Apparently Zeke is either deliberately pretending to be J.J.‘s husband (which, since he doesn’t have any way to pay the bill with Mike’s credit card, seems kind of superfluous) or Rifkin has just for whatever reason taken it for granted that Zeke and J.J. are married and since he knows that J.J.‘s last name is “Doonesbury,” he’s presuming his name is “Zeke Doonesbury”. If the latter, Zeke isn’t correcting Rifkin because even he knows it’s unwise to make someone who holds your life (or that of a loved one) in his hands feel like an idiot. Some people can get really touchy about things like that.

I have never noticed the paunch on Zeke before. So not only is he a bum, he is a fat bum.

When my wife divorced her previous husband, she went back to her maiden name, resolving that there was no reason for her to keep changing it. Thus whenever I deal with personnel (e.g., medical) on her behalf, they keep addressing me by her last name. If it’s someone I’m only going to deal with once, I don’t bother making the correction.

This will be interesting when the doctor finds out neither of them can pay the bill.

At first I thought, “Mr. Doonesbury? Zeke Doonesbury?” Then I realized the MD must have seen J.J.s ID and assumed…
