This forum, populated as it is by people with a point of view, would seem to be an appropriate place to thank all veterans on this day in their honor.

Socialism for the rich is always OK with those who don’t sympathize with OWS. It is just socialism for the rest of us that they can’t stomach. Many of them aren’t millionaires themselves but have bought into the American myth that they can get there by pulling up on their own boot straps, even if they don’t have boot straps to pull.

Today is Veterans Day but the stock markets in New York, London, and Paris are open. I mention these 3 cities because these countries were on the winning side when the guns fell silent on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. It is time we got our priorities straight and appropriately honored the men and women who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their countries. This is especially true for the countries I mentioned because these 3 nations now have volunteer armed forces.

There seems to be a connection between doonesbury.com and gocomics.com. The strip has appeared on other sites at usual time the last 2 days but not on the 2 I mentioned. The strips eventually did appear on doonesbury.com and gocomics.com at the same time.

Thanks to all the veterans who hang out here, and those that don’t , for all you’ve done for us.

Practical ways for OWSs to stay going through winter: porta johns and showers, large outside heaters (rent), army cold-weather tents (rent), gloves, hats, sleeping bags are blankets in daytime, and a few army “butler” buildings for breaks from the weather. OWS does have $. Use it to STAND .

Remembrance Day, Armistice Day, Veterans Day – Doesn’t matter what you call it. Thank you. Thank you to those who went before, thank you to those who did not come home, thank you to those who came home, thank you to those still out there..People protest about a lot of different things. The OWS and all of us should remember – we are alive, we are here, we have the right to protest and the right to speak out without fear because of veterans.

We could gather up all the OWS encampments and relocate them to a single location. Call it District 9. (just kidding).OWS is breeding crime. Why? In part because it is an uncontrolled mob that stays in place for days and weeks on end. Most other American protest movements have some sort of formal or ad-hoc leadership. They go out one speak their message, and go home..The more unruly elements of society are naturally attracted to uncontrolled mobs, so OWS artificially boosts that demographic wherever it camps out..That’s not a comprehensive explanation for the OWS-fueled crime wave, just one factor. The crimes range from the apolitical to the very political, so there’s more at work..Joanie is either an idiot or is being drawn to the Duke side of the Force. People who exploit mobs tend to not be lower-case-d democratic types.

Perhaps the OWS anonymity is strategic. If OWS were to choose leaders and define themselves as some kind of Opposition, Bloomberg could create a file on them and—-like Damascus—-send in the troops to purge them.

I’ve got a public service announcement.

The 5.0.1 update for the iPhone is out, and it addresses issues dealing with “voice recognition for Australian users using dictation”. So now Siri can understand what they’re saying Down Under, which shouldn’t be necessary if they spoke English the way it was meant to be spoken in the first place.

At today’s Veteran’s Day parade in SF special focus was on Iraq veteran Scott Olson, the OWS protester shot in the head with tear gas by police in Oakland a couple of weeks ago. “According to a Facebook page dedicated to Olsen, members of the military community are taking care of their own and asking the public to do the same.”

    Too bad it’s raining.

FriscoLou: “English the way it was meant to be spoken”? Who decided which way that was?

As I understand it, the purest English is spoken in the Appalachians, with the drawl used in Elizabethan times in England. Would that suit you?

@FriscoLouWhen it comes to understanding spoken English, ex-colonials in the Western hemisphere (Americans and Canadians) have an advantage that other non-British lack.Let me illustrate by two examples. I was traveling in Greece when I met an ex-army officer fluent in English. He complained bitterly about visiting London and finding the cab drivers “didn’t speak English.”Recently I read about a woman from India who lost her job at a bank in London because she misunderstood what a Scot had communicated to her. “It wasn’t my fault,” she said. “The man couldn’t speak English.”My point is that Americans and Canadians expect variety. We’re confident that our “accentless” California- or Ottawa-speak is clear to everyone who knows English. But can we always understand Brooklyn-speak, or Birmingham-speak?I don’t know Canada well enough to say what dialect there leads to confuseion. But I remember when my wife and I were looking for a bed-and-breakfast in Quebec. The English-speaking landlady couldn’t accommodate us, so she called a friend and asked: “Charlotte, avez vous oon shamber avec leet matrimonial poor say swar.”The garbled French was fluent and perfectly clear to Charlotte, who put us up for the night.

pd, the things other people do with our language. When I was in the Apple store getting the phone activated, my call (Sprint) went to an off shore call center that sounded like a satellite connection in Peshawar. They got every thing wrong right off the bat, and after 2 hrs and about 5 layers we were able to get the call back on shore where we could communicate and activated the phone in about 5 mins. It took all the christlib instincts I could muster, just to maintain.
