Oh my gawd, Mike is doing that story from the “Superman” radio series where Superman is buried alive with kryptonite, then randomly found by duck hunters!
Well, we’ve had the usual “left to die in not-so-deadly trap.” Here comes the usual part 2: “Found by random passer-by.” One would think that the bad guys would get wise after doing the same mistake for 85 years.
The difference ‘tween Gould’s seat-of-your-pants plotting & Mike’s— Gould had ingenuity (& some editorial oversight @ The Tribune)…Mike has deep-cut continuity. Would have been nice to have seen Tracy escape this one on his own. ALSO 2nd time an assassin from Bribery’s camp has tried to take him out & a 3rd party has come to the rescue.
How bad is this snowstorm too (presumably one on such a scale that Sawtooth was waiting for it to enact his plan) that folks are out hunting rabbit in it?
Charles Ettinger said he finished his inking duties before Christmas but he has a credit on today’s strip. The last week of strips were obviously inked by Joe. You can tell by the slightly heavier lines.
Geographical distance has always been a very fluid concept in Dick Tracy. The famous North Woods were originally supposed to be about 150 miles from the city. Yet when Wormy took off on foot, he ended up in the county fairgrounds quite near the city, and here we have Ruby, whose cabin was depicted as being far away near a vacation resort, about to come upon Tracy, who had been driven into a woods fairly near the city. That used to drive me crazy, until I just decided to quit worrying about it and enjoy the story.
“Oh, Mr. Game Warden. I hope you can help me. I’ve been told I could shoot wabbits and goats and pigeons and mongooses and dirty skunks and ducks. Could you tell me what season it weawwy is?”
“Why, soitenly, me boy. It’s baseball season! Here, boy! Here, boy! Go get it! Go get it!”
Reposting this outside of the original thread, so it won’t get lost …
Here – I think – is a llink to that episode of “The Adventures Of Superman” radio series that Mike is paying tribute to with this new plot development, one of my favorites in terms of the sheer audacity of it …
Rifle Ruby and nephew Rhett, rifles ready, set out for rabbits. Instead, they will find a chilly detective in yellow trench coat and fedora. And for Ruby, it will be deja vu. When Dick revives, he will be recuperating at the Small Cabin in the North Woods. Will Rifle Ruby’s cameo end at that point, or will she have some further function?
You’d think Sawtooth would have checked a map out first, before leaving Tracy in an area that’s actually not so isolated but new an apparently major resort. Funny how they always make that one fatal mistake…

Well, obviously they are not going to find any “wascally wabbits” or “scwewy ducks” out there.
