And before anyone questions “Detective Tracy’s case load”, let’s all remember the many posters’ complaints about loose ends: Where are the Nitrares, is Abner Kadaver in the concrete, what about Blaze Rize, etc!

How’d Punjab get into the Commish’s office with that great hulking scimitar? Did The Asp ‘cloud some minds?’

I love the panel at the lower left, with Tracy’s face juxtaposed with Straightedge’s. Classic composition there.

And I just bet that the commissioner’s reluctance lasts for one panel into Monday, maybe two. :)

The Asp is looking much better now (which is to say, scarier, more like his old self than the young inexperienced-seeming first appearance he made here some weeks ago, of which I was critical; good fix). And with others who have commented already, I believe Daddy and/or his gazillions of warbucks will quickly overcome the Police Commissioner’s reluctance to re-assign Tracy. —Either that, or Tracy will take some personal time to help the effort to find Annie.

I wonder if Tracy might be trying to learn something from J. Straightedge Trustworthy. He was musing yesterday on what JST would do in that situation.

Regarding the Crimestopper’s Textbook, the word already existed in English before 1798, but that was the first time it referred to a law enforcement organization which operated in England.

The original meaning in English referred to government or administration (from Greek, polis “city” or “state”). This dates from 1530 in English. It began to have the meaning of “public order administration” in English as early as 1716 (borrowed from French) and in reference to law enforcement in France or other countries before the cited force in England came into being.

With everybody patting each other’s backs over a job well done, I have to ask: How many of Dick Tracy’s cases actually go to trial?

I am aware of the strip’s long history, but I’ve only read it regularly here for a year or two.

This should prove to be quite interesting. Gray and Gould were friends in real life, and shared some of the same ideology, but the atmosphere of their respective strips was very different. it will be fun to see how Team Tracy blends the two; will they be able to stay true to each?Warbucks’ philosophy on matters of personal protection, for example, would seem to differ very much from Tracy’s own, official outlook.Tracy’s world is mostly about the big city and surrounding areas. Some of “Orphan Annie’s” best sequences took place in hidden haciendas in the deep jungle, or castles with secret passages and the like.So – here we go. Let the fun commence!

Now, just when has anyone ever said “no” to “Daddy” Warbucks? (Of course, the Comish could always respond, “You ain’t in yer own comic strip anymore…”)

Forgive me if this has been asked before but in the last months of the Annie strip, which I really miss, weren’t Punjab and the Asp “lost at sea”? I don’t remember that plot point being resolved before the strip’s demise.

It shouldn’t take long for the Asp to convince the commissioner..Or maybe there’ll be a phone call from the mayor. Or president…

Jamie Foxx doesn’t play Daddy Warbucks in the new “Annie” film. He plays a mayoral candidate named Stacks. According to the IMDB, Daddy Warbucks, Punjab and the Asp are not in it.

So is Dick going to travel the World all summer looking for Annie, and at the end announce that the reason he can’t find her, is that he believes she was a passenger on Malaysia Airlines Flight 370?

Yep, the “Daddy” figure in the new movie will be “Benjamin Stacks” (as in “piles of hundred dollar bills”). I’m sure original flavor Annie wouldn’t mind the new casting, as long as the girl is hard-working and stands up for herself.

On a note more related to this comic, I recently watched several episodes of the 1950 Ralph Byrd “Dick Tracy” TV series. Interesting to Dick Tracy fans, but not well written for the most part. Review here: http://www.skjam.com/2014/06/01/tv-review-dick-tracy/

I honestly have no idea why you’ve worked “PC” into your comment about the new “Annie” movie. They’ve just updated it 80 years and recast the story. No “P” or “C” about it.

Time-Warner owns Batman and doesn’t own Dick Tracy, and that’s a huge reason why there wouldn’t be a cross-over. Indeed it would have been a huge obstacle in 1989, and that was before Disney bought Marvel. I doubt that Time-Warner would have been willing to use one of their big properties to promote a big budget film for Disney.

I never knew Angus was a big time criminal in town. I thought he just owned the race track and movie studios.

You could say that, I suppose, like Mississippi River, where the “missi” part come from an Algonquian word meaning “big” and the “sippi” part means river, so it’s kind of like the “big river river.”

I guess we have an excuse with “state police,” though because in ancient Greece, there were “city-states” where the city was the state, but in the U.S. in the present day, we need to distinguish between the city government and the state government.

The root word for the Greek polis in Indo-european (the mother language of most European languages) meant something like “citadel,” a fortress often up on a hill protecting the city. The “Acropolis” in Athens is in that kind of position, “akros” meaning the highest point, in this case of the city.

We also have the common English word “metropolis” (as in the name of Superman’s city) which comes from mater + polis so the “mother city” or main or capital city of the province or state.

Do “ethnic” girls have red hair and pupiless eyes ?

Even red-haired girls have some ethnicity. As for pupiless eyes, I don’t think Annie ever discriminated on the basis of ethnicity. Anyone could have eyes without pupils.
