¶ Between 2001 & 2007, both the president & Congress was in Republican hands. Result: the weakest economy of the last sixty years; a ballooning of the federal deficit; deregulation of the banking industry, causing the worst recession since the Great Depression; and two pointless wars, causing the death of tens of thousands and a bill that many generations of Americans will pay.¶ From 2007 to 2009, the president was Republican, Congress, Democratic. Result: a slight slowing of the runaway deficit, the onset of the Great Republican Recession, leading to huge unemployment, and the first steps to help the economy recover.¶ From 2009 to 2011, the president & Congress were Democratic. Result: a tax break for middle- & working-class Americans, equal pay for women, further steps to end the Great Republican Recession, an end to fighting in Iraq, a major step in health-care reform, an end to torture, a recovery on Wall Street, but still high unemployment. More not accomplished due to the lily-livered Senate Democrats’ refusal to confront the recalcitrant Senate Republicans.¶ From January 2011 to today, the president & the Senate are Democratic, and the House is Republican. Result: Incipient default of the federal government due to the Republicans’ refusal to raise the debt ceiling; the death of Osama bin Laden; the president’s plan to w/draw troops from Afghanistan; and constant squabbling as the president proposes raising taxes on billionaires, and the Republicans prefer ending HeadStart to asking any billionaire for a penny more.
