Children taking ballet brings to mind my 6th grade class’s Christmas act – dancing to selections from The Nutcracker as toys in Santa’s workshop. Girls who had had ballet lessons were ballerina dolls to “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy;” 8 of the other 9 were split into reed flutes (as in “Dance of the”) and teddy bears (finishing the performance to “Waltz of the Flowers.”) The boys were all toy soldiers, in oatmeal carton shakos, to the “March.” One girl who couldn’t or wouldn’t dance popped up as a jack-in-the box on the last note of the Waltz.

The weird thing about ballet dancing is that the serious dancers only look graceful while dancing. They otherwise have a distinct waddle.
