In between this comic, the news that the water tables will be dangerously depleted soon, and the fact that a friend commented online that she’s going to vote based on how good looking the candidates are, it’s been a depressing day on the internet.

You should read The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. It’s subplot is about protecting turtle eggs nests on the beach.

Aw, don’t worry girl. Your hatchlings probably would have just scrambled towards the streetlights instead of the ocean anyway.

But while the focus on beaches and hatchlings is great, it’s not going to be enough to save sea turtles. The threats to the “teenage” sea turtles in the open ocean are just as great – if not greater – than the threats to the eggs and babies on the beaches. No one knows much about what happens in the years between hatching and the first return to a beach as a breeding adult. They just know a lot of those babies don’t grow up to breed.

(In natural conditions, a lot of them don’t grow up anyway – that’s part of turtles’ natural reproductive ecology. But something is keeping the babies from growing up in sustainable numbers.)

Wow, this is the most bizarre list of comments I’ve ever seen on GoComics. Where are all of the commentors who believe that polluting is OK? Or are they only vocal when defending companies that generate “invisible” pollution, like air and water pollution? Or perhaps dumping trash on the beach doesn’t have a host of defenders because there aren’t any megacorporations that profit from such activities. If there was another panel that showed that the trash was dumped by a big company that saved a lot of money on waste disposal by dumping it into the ocean, would that get some commentors to lambast this strip? Can GoComics really run a pro-environment strip without ANYBODY attacking it? If that isn’t one of the signs of the apocalypse, it should be.
