Am I crazy, or did J.J. accidentally put Arlo’s fourth-panel reaction in the third panel?
Janis is being a devoted wife, praising Arlo’s grilled veggies so he won’t be upset about how the pork chops turned out. But wouldn’t his reactions to her two statements make much more sense if they were reversed?
Man, how do you screw up pork chops? Can the even be overcooked? Burned crisp? More BBQ sauce! By the gallon! Grilled veggies are the best though, no kidding….it’s an art…..
If Janis likes the veggies so much then all the more pork chops for Arlo! His reaction in panel three is from the revelation that Janis is not as much of a carnivore as he is and actually likes the rabbit food. JJ’s opinion may differ but he’d be wrong. :oP
That said, I also believe that in the 3rd panel, Arlo is reacting to the taste of the pork chop. Note that he has what is presumably a fork in his hand. Janis is indeed trying to assuage his feelings.
For “Arlo and Janis” in particular, I often appreciate other commenters’ explanations of things that leave me going “huh”? Also, often commenters pick up little details that heighten the appeal of the strip.
I’m sorry. Even with everyone’s comments I still don’t get it. My wife and I came up with different interpretations from each other and I’m still lost.

I do think we sometimes over-analyze.
That said, I also believe that in the 3rd panel, Arlo is reacting to the taste of the pork chop. Note that he has what is presumably a fork in his hand. Janis is indeed trying to assuage his feelings.
