BTW, I have a written excuse for Leaky’s absence tonight, and possibly tomorrow night. It seems that he will be out seeking his fortune yet again.

Poor poor Patty….why does she put herself through bringing the boyfriend to Mom and Dad’s house again?Maybe she’s serious about the guy, and trying to get him acclimated in small doses.Problem is, no dose could ever be small enough.

Three cookies, three cupcakes, one apple(?)Is Joy being nice or is she saying “I hear you’re a vegetarian so all you must want for dinner is an (obviously unsprayed) apple?”To her credit, she went to the health food store to get something to offer him…but the apple was the only thing in the place she recognised.Make a difference, Burl…. shut up.Don’t bother checking the bulbs, though….we can see that they’re all dim.

Well, why would anyone buy an unripe tomato? I really can’t see Joy going to all the trouble of fixin fried green tomatoes. Yum!Consider that Patty might change cute Ivies like other people change socks and this is the way she breaks up; she brings them home to meet the folks and they run screaming into the night. Burl and Joy seem to be in on the process and they haven’t invested much in him. Looks like a wormy apple and a glass of ice water to me.

They make bags out of paper? Where would you find one of those?

Groceries used to have a pile of little paper bags in the produce dept. Must have been too many people like the Pennys- they no longer do that. I usually get bags when I buy my cooking wine (either at grocery or liquor store) and same them for ripening things or also for crushing egg shells for the garden.

I’m the tomato queen, according to my friends…. I eat as many as I can get.For 3 weeks so far this year I’ve been working a couple of hours for tomatoes at the farmer’s market every Wednesday night…they don’t pay me any money, just mostly tomatoes. They won’t get ripe here till late August… and my yard is tiny, with gophers and inadequate hours of sun…but I plant them anyway, in used, 5 gallon nursery pots….. 31 plants this year. still looking for a certain one for the 32nd pot.Yeah…. I know….

Poodlegroomer — I’m pretty much an omnivore myself…. but I have vegetarian and vegan friends, and have cooked for both…and they don’t criticise my choices for myself.Somewhere along the way you sure met the wrong vegetarians!Where in the world would you get the crazy idea that vegetables, fruit, cheese, eggs, and grains consist of fat sugar and starch??Most meaty diets, including mine, are far fattier than vegetarian ones… or especially vegan, which eliminate the dairy and eggs. But vegans eat things like tofu, nuts and legumes, which are high in protein and vitamins… and most are far more careful with balancing their intake than people I know who eat mostly meat and potatoes.Meanwhile…. the tomatoes you see spilling from cannery trucks are not the same varieties as those grown for table use..they’re sturdier and less flavorful and sweet…and the ones grown for the farmer’s market and in back yards are another step that direction.Backyard tomato varieties wouldn’t stand up to mechanical harvesting or canning — you can tell the difference by the fact that the ones on the highway don’t splatter.

The tomatoes I used to have in my childhood were grown spontaneously on the compost pile that my parents had in between ours and neighbor’s garages. I have tried to compost all my peels and veg scraps (even chopped up the nopales from prickley pear in front yard when I trim it) but my landscapers do not understand the idea of “turning” the soil and ours has no grass trimmings as I have gravel and flagstone. .This month they showed up on the 31st of May and when I skimmed my filters the next day I found that they broke one of my lovely resin statues in 1/2 ;-( I really think they should replace it this time (they have broken lesser things but this one is irreplacable- I can get a similar for just under $100) and I am really P***ed

I agree that home grown tomatoes are much better (especially back in IL-our growing season is too short so it is unproductive for me to try)
