Val: You look GOOD, Mom. How's it going in Haiti?
Gramma Evie: We just finished our 200th house!
Val: WOW. That's amazing...but there's so much NEED! How can you hope to help everyone?
Gramma Evie: Board by board, Valerie...board by board.

There is one thing I do not understand.Seems that there are 40% of unemployment in Haiti. Why do not they build those houses themselves, why they need help from Evie? I understand they may need material help, but don’t they have more than enough workforce?
That is asked with all respect to everyone helping developing nations, being myself member of nation who recently received many help from americans. Thank You!

Leadership, coordination, leadership. And sometimes probably just setting an good example.
Makes sense. Thanks again!

One of the reasons so many homes collapsed in Haiti is that there were hardly any building codes. Getting help from people who KNOW how modern homes should be built would be much better than people throwing up shacks and shanties.

there’s an interesting mentality…

Reminds me of a line from the move “Machine Gun Preacher”. Sam is told he can’t save all the kids…that there are just too many. Sam’s response: “We can save these ones right here.”

It would be a better place if everyone had Evie’s spirit and kindness.

There’s a Chinese saying, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” and a Jewish one’"He that saves one life, it is as if he saved the whole world."
In other words, a single candle can light up a lot of darkness!

Haiti is one thing. I’m personally wondering how people in Japan are doing, 14 months after their earthquake and tsunami.

I think that Japan also is getting lots of help. I wonder who is helping New Orleans? It seems that those closest to home get lost in the shuffle- I was there in 2009 and little had changed, considering it was the States.

The ones who help build their own homes will look after the house. Those who have the house built FOR them will trash it. Which is why Habitat for Humanity insists that the owners help build their own home.

How can I volunteer for something like what Val is doing?
