I get the stag party joke, but what is the importance of him being late?

The joke is just the stag party. The one stag is late so that we get the clue “bachelor party” through the dialog. If you visit Wikipedia, you see that a bachelor party is also called a stag party, and even is called a buck party. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_party

uhm …bachelors go to a stag party, but stags go to a bachelor party… I think that’s about it….

I thought “going stag” was not bringing anything to eat or drink. Or going alone.

In wintertime lone bucks gather together in what biologists call “bachelor groups” for safety. A few years ago a hunter here in Utah shot an antlered female mule deer. Very unusual, but not unheard of. Today’s strip made me think of that.

It would have been funnier (although inappropriate) if a pair of legs were sticking out from the bush or if a doe was waving over the fence… but cute enough word-play, I suppose.

Thank you, Boychucks, for challenging our intellects and imaginations. It’s funny when you “get it.”
