My sister did that once. Tragic to the budding green thumb, but very amusing to her brothers. Love those eyes, Janis.

    Varnes…ewww.

Hey, did something like this happen in ancient China, and give somebody the idea of stir-frying bean sprouts?

Careful. My daughter told me people don’t like spelling nazis on the internet. Misspellings bother us and not them. They don’t realize one misspelling on a post can be like a big red flag that says STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!

Hey guys lighten up, it is a misspelling probably by a busy person trying to brighten his day, not the end of the world. Get a life.

I hate people who put an apostrophe before the s at the end of a plural noun. For example “Cheeseburger’s $2.00”. The cheeseburger has a two-dollar bill?

Susan, ewwww? Gee, I didn’t even think about evergreens. (around my yard they look more like everbrowns!) Anyway, since this is tulip weather, let’s put our two lips together!

You hit my pet peeve right on the head with the misuse of “your” for “you’re.” My favorite miscreant was making disparaging noises about the public school system in an online comment and made that mistake. That made him ripe for a retort as his highly regarded private school education didn’t even teach him the proper use of those simple words. Can we say “open mouth and insert foot?”

OK, again…. these are public forums. Some of us here are far luckier than others…. if you use perfect grammar, please… be grateful. You may have been sent to good schools, had diligent, educated parents or been raised in neighborhoods where good grammar is well modelled. You may simply have an aptitude for those subjects or perhaps have been born more intelligent than some other people — and you did nothing to earn that bit of grace. And you’re obviously a good enough typist to avoid all typos. But this forum is for everyone. There are no educational prerequisites and there’s no entrance exam or typing test. Some quite wonderful people in my life are or have been poor spellers, due to things like poor vision in first grade, a bad home environment or educational system into which they fell, English as a second language, or having to work instead of going to school. It’s true that some people can overcome those things; some have neither the role models nor the time for much education. If I see a poster spell-checking others or boasting about his own grammar, and he makes a mistake… sure, I’ll call him on it.(yes, yes… or her… sigh)But if fellow comics lovers whose English language skills, in your esimation, are not up to par merely want to chime in with a thought or an opinion…. to me, it’s rude and unfriendly to embarrass them. I know….by standing up for the language-impaired, I’ve left myself wide open to be grammar-checked or spell-checked, myself…Well, knock yourself out.LOL!I’m tough and I don’t mind the critique…. but some people are, strangely enough, quite sensitive to being made to feel inferior.

I’ve noticed, by observing four generations in my family, that good spelling seems to be inborn and hereditary. My father, I, my younger daughter, and two out of four grand kids were or are great spellers. The rest are okay, except for the youngest grandchild, who apparently is going to have a tough row to hoe. On the other hand, I am a complete ditz when it comes to remembering numbers, especially when I have to spout an address or phone number instantaneously. Once a nurse gathering info was convinced that I have Alzheimer’s when I couldn’t remember the phone number where I was staying, no matter what I said. I COULD remember everyone’s birth date, though. Good thing this disability doesn’t show up in the comments!

    Jadoo —

First off, I make a distinction between paid writers, or even aspiring paid writers, such as bloggers and columnists, of whom I can be more critical, and site visitors from all over the world who just want to share their enjoyment of comics, and perhaps meet kindred spirits, and are NOT prepared to show off their writing skills.

I don’t see where I encouraged disliking anybody…I do have to say that actively disliking someone for something as trivial as a lack of spelling ability seems very shallow to me.

Do you really dislike all bad typists, dyslectic or mentally challenged people, everyone who had the misfortune of being denied a good education, and most learners of English as a second language??

Wow!And the problem is, in a forum you can’t always tell the players.

In fact, Afficionado isn’t a native speaker of English, though he speaks it quite well. And he was posting around midnight, when many of us grow a bit tired and careless….It’s not a crime.Anyway a gentle correction is one thing, but an attack that starts “there’s no nice way to say this” is quite another, smiley face not withstanding!(and yes, that wasn’t you.But I don’t dislike jgmoore either…I’d just like people to tone down the harshness and superiority.)

GoComicsMember – almost forgot.Yes, he should. It was a mistake…and a large part of what we rather crudely, or quaintly, refer to as “class” or “good breeding” consists of not mentioning the gaffes and foibles of others. We may sit at whatever table we choose…but we must not disparage those at the other tables to their faces….especially if we take seats there ourselves.

Re the comic — How about “brains,” “brains” — those poor little sprouts just got fried!!

Re spelling and grammar, I can understand when folks make the occasional mistake in spelling — but as a former college prof, the really annoying and persistent mistake in term papers is confusing “then” and “than.” Come on folks, they don’t mean anywhere near the same thing.

Reminds me of a trick a friend showed me for getting rid of those ‘unwanted plants’ (some call ‘weeds’) without hurting the others nearby. Dig out the old camping coffepot (that big enameled one) – or an electric hot-pot, boil-up a potful of water, carefully pour it out on just the ones you want gone. Repeat tomorrow if needed.
