It seems to me Limbaugh knew exactly what he was doing. He’s a master of language and realizes the nuances in what he broadcasts — unless he was under the influence, of course. Regardless of what you think of his viewpoints, he’s a professional willing to take risks. He might have miscalculated slightly, but he’ll come back. And if not, well, he’s already a multi-multi-millionaire.

In FOLLOWING THE EQUATOR, Mark Twain relates a conversation with P.T.Barnum. Barnum wanted to buy Jumbo the elephant, a favorite at the London zoo. When that didn’t work at first, he made public inquiry into purchase of the Nelson Monument. Much uproar! Then he actually did buy Shakespeare’s birthplace, but in the face of virulent protests “generously” gave it back.

He did get Jumbo, which is what he really wanted after all. But even better, the series of incidents did serve to “furnish me a couple of columns of gratis advertising in every English and American paper for a couple of months, and give my show the biggest boom a show ever had in this world.”

Twain further commented that in planning to make a public apology Barnum thought “… such a letter, written with well-simulated asinine innocence and gush would have gotten his ignorance and stupidity an amount of newspaper abuse worth six fortunes to him, and not purchasable for twice the money.”

People such as Limbaugh are always three steps ahead of the public. Sadly, most pundits in the media are aware of the game and willingly gorge off the resultant publicity, as do remoras from sharks.

NO TAX-PAYER MONEY IS INVOLVED IN THIS ISSUE! (For the ten billionth time………..) So therefore “we” the tax-payers aren’t allowed to look at pornvideos (although Rush has outed himself and his 4th wife as liking the damn things……..)Although I’m no Calvin Trillin, I humbly submit for your approval the following:

You know as well as anyone that Bill Maher has a limited audience who pay for HBO, and that he called out nobody but the loudmouthed and very vocal dingbats who purport to speak for the Republican party. Please re-read my post slowly and carefully. I think Limbaugh is a professional communicator, in the sense a hitman or a call girl or an ad writer for tobacco products is a professional.

He is a propagandist who twists truth into weird balloon shapes for gullible dopes. To justify his bloated pay there is no s—- he will not say. If you think he is completely stupid or tasteless he has deluded you. I resent having to live in a world where he and people like Charlie Sheen make millions.

I thought I made a neat point in comparing him to P.T. Barnum, and in the process giving one of you the incentive to read a less known book by Mark Twain, whom I admire very much.

This is getting interesting. As of today at least 50 sponsors have canceled their ads on his show. goo.gl/I7zZ5Media Matters has reported that on his show yesterday that 86 ads were aired on his show, of which 77, were public service announcements (which are not paid for). In addition, because the show did not have enough ads to run, there was 5:33 of dead air when ads should have been running.I’d say the boycott has been pretty effective so far. As of today, the list of known sponsors of the show is down to 17.goo.gl/s1FwWAnd all of those are not big bucks major corporations.

And now, were comes Sean Hannity, trying to stir up the race issue with a tape that ‘proves’ Obama is a radical who plays favorites with minorities.

Slanthead’s already been caught in one huge whopper on this, claiming that this tape was ‘suppressed by the left during the 2008 campaign.’ ( It actually showed on Frontline that year. )

These nudniks just never learn.

I think you missed the point… Limbaugh was the Barnum in that equation.

A lot of us don’t listen to Limbaugh because we find him way too tiresome to handle in 3 minute doeses, let alone a 3 hr broadcast, but we do love the effect he has in mobilizing The Left to expose their irrational hatreds and thought processes. Well, revenue anyway. Soros’ empire makes more money than Limbaugh’s operations. Media Matters could never survive if it were measured on a ratings scale. MSNBC wouldn’t even give that operation a visible venue.

I have an actual comment on the strip itself. What is intended by “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.” Is that in any way a reference to Bill Clinton notorious act with Monica Lewinsky? Or does it simply mean not to blame the cigar for the opportunistic demagogue who is behind it?

I had expected someone to answer the cigar question by now. Since no one has (apologies if I missed it), the cigar is just a cigar line is attributed to Sigmund Freud as his way of saying that not everything had a hidden meaning.

I would have thought the cigar quote would be pretty well-known. Of course if Freud didn’t smoke them himself, his quote might have been quite different…..And then there’s Rudyard Kipling with his “A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a SMOKE!”

I have listened to Rush Limbaugh for 22 years for one reason. He is truthful, honest, and more intelligent than any 10 of the (fellow) cartoonists who take cheap shots when he gets caught being too honest. How about a cartoon that makes fun of the little tramp whose testimony is about begging for taxpayer money for as much risk-free sex as she can handle?

Rush Limbaugh has played his instrument of intimidation and propaganda and "agitprop " for 25 years for the enjoyment of his fans and to the anger of his critics and called himself " an entertainment " to cover his sins in doing it. Both then, and now, he has always known what he is up to and what his next step will be, and whom he can turn to for his wingman cover. It was only days after Limbaugh’s gaffe that conservative pundits, critics, Fox News Network, and fans were calling for Rush’s forgiveness and pleading ‘mea culpa’ for their icon figure. Rush was laughing all the way to the bank.
