Actually the SEAL’s were formed during the Kennedy administration in 1961, along with the Army’s Special Forces, although a lot of the SEAL’s plank members came from UDT formed in WWII, under Roosevelt. (Special Forces also trace their history back to WWII with The 1st Special Service Force, a joint Canadian/U.S. group, again, Roosevelt)
I correct myself. The OSS Jedburgh teams were probably the most direct line to the modern Army Special Forces as far as combat mission. JFK authorized the “Green Beret” for special forces.
